What is the Jones Act? Trump abandons 100-year-old shipping law for 60 days to lower fuel prices during Iran war

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 60-day temporary waiver of the century-old Jones Act, a move aimed at easing rising energy prices amid ongoing turmoil in global oil markets due to escalating tensions with Iran. The decision allows foreign-flagged vessels to transport fuel and other essential goods between U.S. ports, a major shift from longstanding domestic shipping rules. The White House said the exemption was intended to cushion the economic impact of supply disruptions caused by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt said the move would “mitigate short-term disruptions to oil markets” and ensure that critical resources such as oil, natural gas, fertilizers and coal can flow more freely through U.S. ports. The news comes as oil prices surge and supply chains are strained by disrupted shipping routes and instability at major chokepoints around the world.

What is the Jones Act

The Jones Act, formally known as the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, is a United States federal law regulating domestic maritime commerce. The law was enacted after World War I to strengthen the U.S. shipping industry that had suffered heavy losses from German submarine attacks.Under the act, any cargo transported between U.S. ports must be transported by a vessel that:

  • Built in the United States
  • owned by U.S. citizens
  • Register under the American flag
  • The crew is mostly made up of Americans

The law is designed to support national security and maintain a strong domestic shipping fleet. Critics, however, argue that it limits competition and raises transportation costs, particularly for fuel and essential goods.

Why exempt now

The temporary shutdown comes as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly conflicts involving Israel and Iran, disrupt global energy supplies. The Strait of Hormuz is a key flashpoint, through which a large portion of the world’s oil supplies pass. Disruptions in the region caused crude oil prices to surge and had knock-on effects on global markets. In the United States, gasoline and diesel prices have climbed sharply in recent weeks, forcing the government to take swift action.By waiving the Jones Act, the administration hopes to increase shipping flexibility, allowing foreign vessels to help transport fuel domestically and potentially easing supply bottlenecks. The Jones Act waiver coincides with the U.S. Treasury Department easing sanctions on Venezuela’s state-owned oil company PDVSA, allowing U.S. companies to resume business with the oil giant under certain restrictions, as the Trump administration seeks to increase global crude supplies amid the war with Iran.

Will it decrease fuel price

Experts say the impact is likely to be limited. While exemptions can improve logistics and reduce transportation restrictions, fuel prices are affected by global crude oil markets, refinery capacity and geopolitical risks. Any relief from the pump may be temporary.Still, the move is indicative of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to stabilize energy markets, along with measures such as easing oil-related restrictions and tapping strategic reserves.

I-PAC raid: SC questions Mamata’s role, tells Bangladesh govt ED cannot remain helpless

0

New Delhi: Supreme Court Wednesday condemned West Bengal government for objecting to its effectiveness law enforcement bureauChief Minister Mamata Banerjee has entered a plea for alleged obstruction in the I-PAC raid. The Supreme Court noted that no entity can be left without remedies under the Constitution.A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and NV Anjaria asked how legal recourse would be sought if the central investigation agency is not allowed to approach the court.“If, as you argue, the ED cannot file a writ under Section 32, then it certainly cannot approach the High Court under Section 226. Where will they go? There cannot be a vacuum,” the top court said. The judge also cited Mamata for allegedly obstructing officers during the raid, saying that raised larger constitutional issues.Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for the state, argued that the ED was not a legal entity and therefore could not file the writ petition. He said only the Union of India has the authority to initiate such proceedings and warned that allowing departments to independently invoke writ jurisdiction could disrupt the federal structure.Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Mamata, also argued that the education ministry was unable to seek directions in connection with the CBI probe into alleged obstruction of justice.Meanwhile, in its plea, the central agency sought to register an FIR against Banerjee and the police. It also raised questions about the FIR filed by the West Bengal police against its personnel.Earlier, on January 15, the Supreme Court termed the alleged obstruction of justice as “very serious” and stayed the FIR against the ED officials who conducted the raids. It also directed the West Bengal police to preserve CCTV footage of the operation. The court also issued notices to Banerjee, the West Bengal government, former superintendent of police Rajiv Kumar and other senior police officers on a request from the education ministry seeking a CBI probe into alleged obstruction of justice.

After winning, trump card Posting on his platform Truth Social, he repeated an idea he shared earlier in the game that Venezuela could become part of the United States. He wrote: “Foundation!!! President DJT.”

The night before, after Venezuela beat Italy, Trump made a similar post, writing: “Good things are happening in Venezuela lately! I wonder what the heck this magic is? Nationhood, #51, anyone? President Donald J. Trump.”

USA vs Venezuela: Match Highlights

In the final of the World Baseball Classic, Venezuela took an early 2-0 lead and looked to be in control of the game. The United States fought back when Bryce Harper hit a big home run in the eighth inning to tie the score at 2-2 and re-energize the stadium.

But in the first half of the ninth inning, the Venezuelan team regained the lead 3-2 and finally won the championship, and the fans celebrated.

Before the game, head coach Omar Lopez made the team’s stance clear, saying: “I’ve been in baseball for 28 years, and to be honest, I don’t talk about political issues.”

“I’m here to talk about our Venezuelan team. I’m not here to talk about the political situation around the world, around our country,” he added.

This victory means more than just winning a game. Earlier this year, Trump ordered action to oust Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, plunging the country into more political uncertainty.

‘Sack him’: Keir Starmer slams Nick Timothy over ‘act of domination’ remark on Muslims praying in Trafalgar Square

'Sack him': Keir Starmer slams Nick Timothy over 'act of domination' remark on Muslims praying in Trafalgar Square

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer slammed Conservative MP Nick Timothy over his remarks on Muslims praying at an Open Iftar gathering at Trafalgar Square. Speaking in Parliament, Starmer accused the Conservatives of having “a problem with Muslims” and asked Tory leader Kemi Badenoch to sack Timothy from the shadow cabinet.

What Starmer said

Starmer said Timothy had suggested “that Muslims praying in public, including the mayor of London, practicing his faith, are not welcome.”He added: “He described it as an act of domination. Straight from the Islamist playbook. If he was in my team, he’d be gone. It’s utterly appalling. She should denounce his comments and she should sack him.”

Doubling down, Starmer said: “When I see religious events in Trafalgar Square, when I see Hindus celebrating Diwali, when I see Jews celebrating Hannukah live, when I see Christians performing the passion of Christ or Muslims praying, that shows the great strength of our diverse city and country.”He further said: “I’ve never heard her party call out anything other than the Muslim events. It’s only when Muslims are praying. The only conclusion is the Tory party has got a problem with Muslims.”

Nick Timothy faces criticism

Timothy’s remarks, in which he called mass prayer in public an “act of domination”, drew widespread criticism across political lines. Independent MP Adnan Hussain called his comments “disgraceful,” questioning whether similar objections were raised for gatherings by other faiths.Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy accused him of “fanning the flames of division,” while Labor deputy leader Lucy Powell termed the reaction “extreme.”However, some Conservatives backed Timothy, with party figures defending his remarks as standing up for “British values.”

‘London is for everyone’: Sadiq Khan

London Mayor Sadiq Khan pushed back against the criticism, highlighting the city’s diversity.Sharing images from the gathering and other multi-faith celebrations at Trafalgar Square, Khan said London “will always be a place for everyone,” emphasizing unity across communities. The controversy began after Timothy posted a video from an Open Iftar event organized by the Ramadan Tent Project, which hosts public gatherings during Ramadan. Sharing the video, he wrote, “mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination,” and added that such events “shouldn’t happen again.”The event at Trafalgar Square was attended by people of multiple faiths and backgrounds.

Parts of Delhi NCR lash heavy rain; IMD says thunderstorms, gusty winds likely this week

New Delhi: Rainfall occurred in parts of the National Capital Region of Delhi on Wednesday, with a noticeable change in weather conditions and a drop in temperature. Indira Bhawan’s video showed persistent rain under overcast skies, while scenes at Moolchand Metro Station captured commuters moving through light to moderate showers. Rain and gusty winds were also reported from Palam district, indicating widespread weather activity across Delhi.High-speed winds sweeping through Delhi caused power outages and chaos in several areas of the capital, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning urging residents to stay indoors and avoid fragile structures. People are warned to stay away from windows, poles and overhead power lines, while loose objects are secured to prevent accidents.Farmers were advised to temporarily halt outdoor work and move livestock to safer areas, while motorists caught in the storm were told to pull over safely and stay in their vehicles rather than drive through strong winds and flying debris.according to India Meteorological DepartmentThe city is likely to continue experiencing light rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds until March 20. Wind speeds are likely to be between 20-30 km/h, with gusts up to 40-50 km/h, especially in the afternoon and evening. The weather change has been attributed to active western disturbance and cyclonic circulation affecting northwest India, leading to increased thunderstorm activity in the region. The rainfall has caused temperatures to drop, with maximum temperatures expected to drop from around 32–34°C to 26–28°C over the next two days, still below normal for this time of year. The minimum temperature is likely to remain between 16°C and 20°C.The brief rains provided some relief from the early summer heat and improved overall weather conditions in the city. The IMD advises residents to take precautions, exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid flooded areas and trees, and drive with caution.

The hearings for Mullin, Trump’s pick for the Department of Homeland Security, apparently began in chaos. He has been nominated to take over Kristi Noem.

Paul slams Mullin’s ‘anger issues’ during heated confirmation hearing: Five things to know

  1. Paul, the committee chairman, rebuked Mullin in his opening remarks, saying he “understands” why Paul was violently attacked by a neighbor in 2017. “I just wonder whether someone who celebrates violence against a political opponent is appropriate to lead an institution that has struggled to accept limits on the appropriate use of force,” he said.
  2. Paul said Mullin’s criticism was indicative of a larger “pattern” of confrontational behavior, showing footage of previous altercations involving Mullin and questioning whether Americans should trust a “person with anger issues to set an appropriate example for ICE and Border Patrol agents.”
  3. Mullin responded to Paul by acknowledging that he was “very forthright” and “could understand why [Paul’s] neighbor did what he did,” but said he does not support political violence. He stressed that his differences with Paul and other senators “do not stop me from doing my job as secretary of Homeland Security at all,” further asserting that “I will protect everyone” and that the position is “bigger than our partisan bickering.”
  4. “I’m not afraid of challenges,” Mullin said. “I’m afraid of failure.” He added: “We have to Department of Homeland Security funding,” referring to the looming shutdown.
  5. Paul has yet to reveal his vote for Mullin’s confirmation; however, the Oklahoma senator apparently lacks supporters for his position as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “The record should show — and I think will show — a lack of contrition, no apology, no regret for your support,” Paul responded.
“I will not apologize for pointing out your character,” Mullin added.

Mullin’s confirmation hearing is scheduled to take place all day Wednesday, and senators on the Homeland Security Committee are expected to vote on Mullin’s nomination on Thursday, Politico reported.

The hearing comes as the Department of Homeland Security shuts down for 32 days, resulting in longer airport security lines and leaving employees without pay for weeks.

Joe Kent resigns: White House says Joe Kent was not involved in Iran action negotiations, reiterates Donald Trump’s confidence in Tulsi Gabbard

White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt on Wednesday sought to contain the fallout from Joe Kent’s resignation over the Iran war. She said the former head of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) was not involved in any discussions related to U.S. actions in Iran and stressed that President Donald Trump maintains “full trust” in the director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Levitt distances Kent from Iran war decisions

Levitt told Fox News that Kent, the first senior Trump administration official to resign over the Iran conflict, “has not been involved in any discussions about Iran’s actions.”The comments appeared aimed at undermining the significance of Kent’s public break with the government, especially as his resignation raised questions about the intelligence foundation of the war and whether dissent existed within the national security apparatus.Levitt used the interview to solidly support Tulsi Gabbard, saying Trump has “full confidence” in the director of national intelligence despite the political firestorm caused by Kent’s exit.

White House rejects Kent’s claim that there is “no imminent threat”

Kent resigned on Tuesday, saying he could not “in good conscience” support Iran’s ongoing war.In his resignation statement, Kent argued that “Iran poses no imminent threat to our country” and claimed the war was started due to “pressure from Israel and its powerful U.S. lobby,” a charge the White House has repeatedly and strongly denied.Levitt responded to Kent’s letter on Tuesday, calling parts of it misleading.“There are a lot of false claims in this letter, but let me talk about one specifically: ‘Iran does not pose an imminent threat to our country,'” Levitt said, according to Fox News.“This is the same false claim repeated over and over again by Democrats and some liberal media outlets,” she added.Levitt further said Trump has “strong and compelling evidence” that Iran is preparing to attack the United States first.

‘Trump will never operate in a vacuum’

Levitt said the intelligence behind the president’s decision came from multiple sources.“The evidence was gathered from many sources and factors,” she said, according to Fox News. “President Trump would never make a decision to deploy military assets against a foreign adversary in a vacuum,” she added. She also defended the broader rationale for the attack, calling Iran “the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism” and saying the regime “proudly kills Americans” and openly threatens the United States before launching military action.According to Fox News, Levitt said that Iran has been actively expanding its short-range ballistic missile capabilities and intends to use these missiles as a shield while pursuing its “ultimate goal” of acquiring nuclear weapons.“The regime’s intent is to use these ballistic missiles as a shield to continue to pursue its ultimate goal of nuclear weapons,” she said. She added that Trump had concluded that a joint strike with Israel would “significantly reduce the imminent threat to U.S. national security interests” and thereby “significantly reduce the risk to American lives.”

Trump has already lashed out at Kent

Levitt’s latest comments come a day after Trump himself publicly attacked Kent following his resignation.Shortly after Kent resigned, Trump said he had always considered Kent “weak on security” and called his departure “a good thing.”“I’ve always thought he was weak on security, very weak on security,” Trump said.He also said that after reading Kent’s statement, “I realized it was a good thing he was out.” Trump argued that if there were people in his administration who believed Iran was not a threat, “we wouldn’t need those people.”

Kent’s exit puts pressure on intelligence chiefs

Kent’s resignation intensifies scrutiny of the administration just as top intelligence officials prepare to face Congress.Kent’s criticism is expected to be highlighted when lawmakers ask intelligence leaders about U.S.-Israeli assessments ahead of the war with Iran.Wednesday’s Senate Intelligence Committee hearing included testimony from Gabbard, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, FBI Director Kash Patel and senior officials from the National Security Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency.Kent’s resignation letter, particularly his assertion that Iran does not pose “an imminent threat to the United States,” will likely become a focal point for Democrats to pressure the administration to ask whether intelligence warrants military action.According to the New York Times, Rep. Jim Himes, the Democratic leader on the House Intelligence Committee, said, “I have seen absolutely no evidence that Iran is about to launch an attack.”

The United States has cut citizenship renunciation fees by 80%. What is the new fee?

0

Surprisingly, the U.S. Department of State has significantly reduced the fee for renunciation of citizenship by approximately 80%, from $2,350 to $450.

The United States has lowered the citizenship renunciation fee from $2,350 to $450, effective April 13.
The United States has lowered the citizenship renunciation fee from $2,350 to $450, effective April 13.

The new rules, expected to take effect on April 13, will make it less expensive for Americans, especially those living overseas, to formally renounce their citizenship.

Although announced in 2023, it is only now being implemented. The action reverses a 2015 rule that made the waiver process U.S. citizenship One of the most expensive countries in the world.

The fees now are equivalent to those in 2010, when the U.S. State Department first began charging fees for Americans who wanted to formally renounce their citizenship.

This fee increased to US$2,350 in 2015 due to an increase in the number of applications for Certificates of Loss of Nationality (CLN). According to the Guardian, the IRS said that approximately 4,820 people will renounce their citizenship in 2024.

“While the law does not require individuals to declare a motive for relinquishing U.S. citizenship, anecdotal evidence suggests that difficulties are at least partially attributable to reporting requirements,” State Council pointed out.

Overview of the process of renouncing U.S. citizenship

Despite the reduced fees, the act of renouncing U.S. citizenship remains complex and lengthy.

Applicants must:

– Go in person to a U.S. Embassy or Consulate

– Fulfill multiple written and verbal confirmations

– Formal oath of renunciation

– Pending final approval and issuance of Certificate of Loss of Nationality (CLN)

The duration of the process may extend to several months or longer, depending on availability at U.S. consulates and embassies.

Reasons for surge in renunciation of U.S. citizenship

The number of Americans choosing to renounce their citizenship has increased significantly in recent years. According to a Boundless report on renunciation of U.S. citizenship, the number of people renounced U.S. citizenship each year has surged from a few hundred before 2009 to more than 5,000 in recent years.

Key factors contributing to this trend include:

– The United States has complex tax reporting requirements for citizens living abroad

– Financial and banking restrictions imposed by other countries

– personal or political motives

U.S. citizens are obligated to file annual tax returns regardless of their place of residence. This requirement creates ongoing compliance difficulties for many people, particularly those who are designated as incidental Americans.
