Earlier, state-level SSA officials had customer service operators to handle recipients’ queries. Because some Social Security rules vary from state to state, SSA field office customer service hotlines are better equipped with the expertise to resolve such issues easily. It makes appointment scheduling and case management efficient.

Now, experts are warning there could be delays in resolving issues as the system becomes the system for more than 70 million people across the country. social Security recipient.

SSA has 1,250 field offices across the country that serve beneficiaries in specific areas. The new, technology-driven state system will handle all benefit changes and appointment scheduling, which could create barriers for many older adults who are less technologically sophisticated.

More information about why SSA Customer Service is going national

Under the DOGE initiative, SSA plans to begin layoffs in early 2025. It plans to cut about 12% of its workforce, or about 7,000 of its 57,000 employees. Reductions are accomplished through retirements, buyouts, and sometimes even layoffs. There are reports that more than 7,000 employees have been laid off.

As part of the job cuts, the government announced plans to overhaul the SSA’s customer service hotline to make it national and more technology-driven. “The American people are experiencing a Social Security Administration transformed through digital innovation and strategic process engineering,” SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano said earlier in January.

Experts say there will be initial delays because customer service The helpline transitioned from local field offices to the national level. In the longer term, however, there is optimism that the system will smooth out and appointment scheduling will improve. But how the impact of this change trickles down to the grassroots remains to be seen.

Notably, in 2025, SSA made an additional 3.1 million payments (more than $17 billion) under the Social Security Equity Act.

Inspired by Devji, more cadres may shun Maoist ideology and join the mainstream

NEW DELHI: The surrender of CPI(Maoist) de facto general secretary Dipiri Tirupasi alias Devji and another central committee member Malla Raj Reddy alias Sangram was like the “final nail in the proverbial coffin of the CPI(Maoist)”, according to anti-Naxalites.When Devji comes to the ground and joins the mainstream, he is likely to be joined by other cadres who work closely with him – an announcement from the Telangana police is expected on Tuesday or Wednesday. A senior IPS official involved in anti-Maoist operations said that the remaining Maoist cadres in all the affected areas are believed to number about 300, mostly operating in groups of 10 to 12 and sometimes in scattered groups of 4 to 5. Their top leaders may not have the ideological baggage or appetite to continue facing the hail of bullets after the fall of their top leaders.Sangram, who is in his seventies, has been inactive of late, but his surrender, like Devji’s, marks the weakening of CPI(Maoist) ideology. After a round of surrenders by Politburo member Malohurla Venugopal, also known as Sonu, and central committee members Chandrana, Ramder, Rupesh and Sujata, the latest surrender involving their top leaders is seen as a potential signal to the Maoists still on the ground to follow orders. “The top leadership has always been dominated by Telugu veterans who once espoused violent, left-wing extremist ideologies and inspired others to ‘fight and fight’ against the state. By choosing pragmatism over ‘adherence to ideology’, junior cadres will have no incentive to continue living a tough life in the jungle,” an officer said. With Devji and Sangram on the verge of surrender, the only remaining active member of the CPI(Maoist) Supreme Politburo and Central Committee is Misir Besla. Besra, who runs the eastern regional bureau of the CPI(Maoist), is the only non-Telugu face in the organization’s decision-making hierarchy. He has been on the run since his close aide Analda was killed in Jharkhand state last month. Besra may be hiding on the Jharkhand-Odisha border and the army is tracking him. “He is likely to take a cue from Devji’s surrender and follow suit,” a police officer said.Meanwhile, multiple operations are being conducted simultaneously along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana-Odisha-Jharkhand axis to continue to exert pressure on the remaining Maoists to surrender or face suppression by security forces.

Only witness to Texas ICE shooting died in car crash days before signing statement

The only known witness to the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old Texas man by federal agents died in another car crash just days before he was expected to formally sign a statement that contradicted the government’s version of events.Joshua Orta, 25, was fatally shot in South Padre Island on March 15, 2025, when his childhood friend Ruben Ray Martinez was shot and killed while he was sitting in the passenger seat, attorneys confirmed.Horta was scheduled to assist with further investigations into the shooting and sign a sworn statement challenging the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) account.

south padre island shooting

Martinez, 23, was shot and killed during a confrontation that was later confirmed to have involved agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit. ICE’s involvement had not been publicly disclosed at the time of the incident.According to the Department of Homeland Security, agents are assisting the South Padre Island Police Department after a major incident. A spokesman said “the driver of a blue Ford intentionally ran over a Homeland Security Investigations agent” and left the agent on the hood of the vehicle.“After witnessing the incident, the other agent fired his weapon defensively to protect himself, his fellow agents and the public,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement. The driver was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The injured agent suffered a knee injury. The Department of Homeland Security identified the deceased as a U.S. citizen from San Antonio and said another man in the car, also a U.S. citizen, has been detained by local police pending charges. That person is Horta.

Horta’s contradictory narrative

In a sworn statement filed with attorneys representing Martinez’s family, Horta described the drive to South Padre Island as “spontaneous” and “relaxing” and said the two friends were preparing to visit others just days after Martinez’s birthday. He claimed that Martinez was driving carefully, did not hit anyone and did not speed dangerously, directly contradicting federal authorities’ claims.“The officer appeared to be trying to get in front of the car and when we tried to turn away, he did not move out of the way as the officer told us,” Horta said in the statement.Horta claimed that a federal agent fired multiple rounds from just a few feet away without warning or giving Martinez a chance to comply. He further claimed that police delayed medical assistance for at least 10 minutes after the shooting.“Following the shooting, law enforcement officers pulled Ruben from the vehicle, where he was apparently unconscious or dead,” Horta wrote. “Nonetheless, they placed him face down on the sidewalk and handcuffed him. At least 10 minutes passed before CPR or other treatment was administered to Ruben.”He also disputed claims that Martinez entered the ambulance lane, assaulted the officer or was in possession of drugs and alcohol.“Ruben was unarmed and non-violent when he was shot, without running away or resisting. His killing was unjust and excessive,” Horta wrote in September.

Call for investigation

Horta’s death intensified calls for an independent investigation into Martinez’s killing. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, said on X that he wanted to know why an “eight-month cover-up” occurred.Alex Stamm, an attorney representing Martinez’s family, described Horta’s death as a devastating blow.“First and foremost, Joshua’s death is a terrible tragedy for his family and friends, and the Reyes family grieves with them,” Stam said. “The world has now also lost an important witness to Reuben’s death.”The Texas Department of Public Safety Ranger Division is investigating the shooting. With the only witness gone, attorneys for the Martinez family say key questions about the circumstances leading up to the fatal encounter on South Padre Island remain unanswered.

Typically, when a payment is made as an early deposit because the first of the month is a Sunday, the payment will start coming into the account on Monday. As a result, many Americans had been expecting their checks to arrive on Monday, but by late afternoon, many reported that their checks were still waiting.

This led many recipients to wonder if there was a delay in their deposits. Posts and discussions have mushroomed on social media, with concerned beneficiaries asking why their checks were allegedly delayed. Here’s what you need to know about the matter.

Are SSI checks delayed?

There is no delay in SSI checks for those who have not yet received deposits into their accounts. In fact, many recipients said on social media that they had received their payments as of Monday, but many reported that they had not.

The delay was reportedly due in part to Social Security Administration (SSA) website faced an outage Monday morning. Thousands of users have reported problems accessing their accounts on the website Down Detector, a platform that tracks such outages based on user reports.

Regardless, the March 2026 SSI payment schedule states that payments can arrive anytime between February 23 and February 26, depending on the bank and financial instrument used to receive benefits.

Some reports say the Automated Clearing House (ACH) system that makes SSI payments is facing problems because it also processes the tax returns of millions of Americans. However, SSI has not officially confirmed the news and the specific details are still unclear.

Cardi B threatens to sue Trump adviser over Nicki Minaj's 'robot' controversy: 'Tell me where I belong'

rapper Cardi B Alex Bruesewitz, an adviser to US President Donald Trump, claims she has ties to a company involved in bot activities involving artist and rival Nicki Minaj. The controversy began with a now-deleted post by Bruesewitz on X. Bruesewitz says reporter Jason Beeferman has ties to Cardi B’s camp, which drew attention to a report from tech company Cyabra about a group of bots pushing #NickiMinaj’s latest conservative stance. Brusewitz called Beaverman a “fake news hack” and claimed he “worked with Cardi B’s manager.”Cardi B responded angrily on X’s website, denying any connection. She wrote: “Tell me what I have to do with this person or they have with anyone I work with…I have no connection to Roc Nation you idiot!” The rapper also criticized the theory that her music label Roc Nation was involved in the controversy, calling it “absolutely ridiculous.”She continued: “The conspiracy theories with Roc Nation are getting so ridiculous… the fact is you work for the government and are slandering my name with false accusations. I’m fucking suing you. Know your game!!!”Even after Cardi B deleted her post, Bruesewitz fired back. He said, “She immediately deleted her threat after I presented the facts that her representatives were actually connected to the company that created the @NICKIMINAJ ‘bot’ scam! Cardi, you don’t have to delete it.”Despite the legal threats, Cardi B insists she had nothing to do with Cyabra’s data or the bot report. In her last post onThe confrontation follows another public controversy earlier the same month, when Cardi B criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a concert in Palm Desert, California. During her performance, she urged fans to speak out against the agency’s actions, saying at one point: “B—h, if ICE comes in, we’re going to jump on – them.” She added that she had bear maces at the venue, declaring: “They’re not going to take away my fans, b—h.Bruesewitz, a Trump supporter, condemned the comments, calling Cardi B a “disgusting person” and claiming she was trying to “incite violence against our ICE officers.”The exchange became more heated after Bruesewitz retweeted Nicki Minaj’s video. Nicki Minaj has supported the Trump administration’s activities and has been criticized by Cardi B. Minaj attended Brusewitz’s wedding in South Florida earlier this month. In response to Cardi B’s ICE remarks, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) posted on social media: “As long as she doesn’t do drugs and rob our agents, we will consider this an improvement over her past behavior.”Cardi B has previously opened up about her past before fame, admitting to drugging and robbing men during her time as a stripper. “Whether it was a bad choice or not, I did what I had to do to survive,” she said at the time.

'Is this just a scam...': People cross over photo of 'Indian student' in queue at Irish university food bank

A photo published by The Irish Times sparked a new wave of attacks against Indians, with one social media user pointing out that a man in the photo looked Indian. The University of Galway food bank turns away hundreds of students every week because of the huge demand for free food, The Irish Times reports. The report tells how 100 students waited their turn at a student-run food pantry, which started out as a way to distribute excess food but has now become a necessity for students who cannot afford food as the cost of living soars. The food bank has a lottery system that selects some and rejects many, leaving hundreds of registered students disappointed every week. While the report only involved college students facing food poverty, the photo sparked debate online, even though there was no confirmation that the student in the photo was Indian. But haters zoomed in on the photo and tried to dox the man. “The Irish Times published an article yesterday about students being turned away from food banks at the University of Galway. Over 90% of them were Indian nationals on student visas. Why would Indians come to Ireland if they can’t feed themselves, or is this just a scam to save money,” the social media post that sparked the debate said. It was written by Peter Paul, who calls himself a proud Irishman. The man dug out a YouTube video made by an Indian advising fellow Indians on how to get free groceries abroad and blaming it on Indian culture. “It’s their culture. They see everything as free like a bonus, no matter the cost to society,” the man wrote as the internet welcomed India’s hatred. “Shouldn’t they be able to support themselves as a condition of getting a visa?” someone asked. Many wondered whether the students in the photo were all Indian and questioned why it was a scam if they were among hundreds of others lining up for a food bank.
