The South Carolina Republican has been a member of the U.S. Senate since 2003 and remained a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump in his later years despite previously running against him in the 2016 Republican primary.
During his tenure, Graham Consistently opposed to the advancement of LGBTQ+ civil rights and opposed marriage equality; advocated against the repeal of the 2011 “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which required service members to conceal their sexual orientation; and voted against protections against workplace discrimination. Regarding transgender rights, Graham specifically endorsed state-level bans on gender-confirming care for minors.

- In a post that went viral on Instagram, transgender writer and actor Jesse James Rose recounted an alleged incident in which she claimed she was compensated by Graham for sex work in college before she transitioned. According to her biography, the author studied at New York University, earning degrees in musical theater and child and adolescent mental health studies.
- “Most of you know him as the homophobic senator from South Carolina, but to me he will always be the guy who paid a transitioning college student a large amount of cash to do unspeakable things to him in a hotel room while wearing red underwear,” the author wrote in the three-slide post. “This is a classic trans thing where far-right freaks fund you and then turn and vote against you.”

Shout out to sex workers everywhere who are forced to humanize their enemies just to make rent,” she further said. “I’m also very concerned that one of the reasons I have financial security (and lack of student loans) is because of this guy.”

Lindsey Graham and homosexuality accusations
Graham vehemently denied claims that he was gay throughout his life. In 2018, when comedian Chelsea Handler hinted at her sexual orientation on social media, the senator responded to the rumors by saying, “As far as it matters, I’m not gay.”
While Rose’s most recent post following Graham’s death is one of the most explicit accusations queer people have made about Graham allegedly employing them in sex work, it’s not the first.
In 2020, adult film actor Sean Harding shared a post online suggesting that an unnamed Republican senator had been involved with multiple gay sex workers. The story was tied to Graham because of the nickname “Lady G,” a codename reportedly used by sex workers in Washington, D.C., to refer to the South Carolina lawmaker. This nickname stayed with Graham for the last few years of his life.
Despite the accusations, Graham has maintained his anti-LGBTQ+ policy positions throughout his political career. Additionally, he was instrumental in the development and enactment of SESTA/FOSTA, a series of laws introduced during the Trump administration that targeted online sex work under the guise of combating human trafficking but allegedly increased the risks sex workers face.
