According to reports, Spandana Lagishetti, an Indian student studying at Elmhurst University in Illinois, suffered a serious accident after falling 25 feet from a subway station. The accident happened on May 30, according to a fundraiser set up on behalf of her family to seek help. “Spandana fell from a height and suffered multiple life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to Lutheran General Hospital where she remains in intensive care in the ICU,” the fundraiser said.“The extent of her injuries was heartbreaking. She suffered a traumatic brain injury including bleeding around the brain, severe brain bruising, a skull fracture and damage to the blood vessels supplying the brain. Several ribs were broken, causing both lungs to partially collapse, requiring emergency chest tube placement. The impact also caused injuries to her liver and spleen, internal bleeding, fractures to her spine and lower back, and multiple fractures to her pelvis. She remains unconscious and doctors are still fighting for her recovery. “The statement added: “Unfortunately, her medical bills are not covered by insurance, and her intensive care costs continue to increase every day. Her family faces an enormous financial burden during this heartbreaking time. Her parents in India are desperately trying to travel to the United States to be with their daughter while dealing with the financial challenges of this sudden tragedy.”According to reports, Spandana came to the US to pursue her master’s degree after completing her bachelor’s degree in science and technology in Chennai. Her father is a taxi driver.
