Russia bombs Ukraine: Russia bombs Ukraine before Zelensky and Trump meet at NATO, killing two
Russia launched another wave of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine overnight, killing at least two people and wounding many more, as the war showed no signs of easing ahead of a high-stakes meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Ankara. The latest attack came a day after Russia launched its deadliest attack on Kiev in recent months, killing 30 people. The new attacks underscore Moscow’s continued pressure on Ukraine even as Nato leaders prepare to discuss military support, regional security and the future course of the war.Kyiv overnight became one of the main targets. AFP reporters in the Ukrainian capital reported that strong explosions were heard before the air raid sirens were sounded, followed by at least four more explosions as Russia stepped up its bombing.Kiev Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said one missile strike caused a warehouse fire in one area, while another sparked a fire at a non-residential building elsewhere in the city.Ukraine’s state emergency service later said two people were injured in the capital.Vitaly King, the military chief of the southern Nikolaev region, said the worst reported death toll was the death of a mother and daughter after Russian troops used guided air bombs in an attack. Two other people were injured in the same attack.Russian airstrikes also hit several other areas of Ukraine. Four people were injured in drone and artillery attacks in eastern Dnipropetrovsk, officials said.Another Russian attack wounded two other people in the southeastern Zaporozhye region, according to the head of the regional military administration.Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, was also attacked, with Mayor Ihor Terekhov saying two people were injured.Ukraine also continues to target Russian territory. Roman Busakin, governor of Russia’s Saratov region, said a Ukrainian drone strike killed one person. The latest escalation comes ahead of a scheduled meeting between Trump and Zelensky on Wednesday, with the war expected to dominate discussions along with broader NATO security priorities.Zelensky has repeatedly urged Ukraine’s Western allies to provide more air defense systems and interceptor missiles, warning that the country lacks the equipment needed to counter Russia’s increasing use of ballistic missiles. While Ukraine continues to intercept scores of Russian drones, officials say Moscow is increasingly relying on ballistic missiles to attack Kiev, putting additional pressure on the country’s already stretched air defense network.
