New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has threatened to reinstate a 25% “punishment” if India does not stop buying Russian crude oil, deepening question marks over the operations of the Nayala refinery in Jamnagar. The crisis facing the refinery has sparked discussions about a change in ownership. While the refinery would be a good acquisition under normal circumstances, the United States’ hardline stance could be a stumbling block for potential buyers and will continue to be so unless there is a major breakthrough in negotiations that allows Russia to pause its aggression in Ukraine. Rosneft, the Russian state-run energy giant, has been sanctioned by the Trump administration in an effort to force Vladimir Putin to agree to suspend its offensive in Ukraine. Rosneft owns a majority stake in the 20 million tons per year refinery. Nayala in Vadinar (Gujarat) is the country’s second largest monomer refinery and specializes in processing heavy crude oil. Before U.S. sanctions were imposed, it relied almost entirely on Russian crude for feedstock. Analysts said India is likely to continue talks with the Trump administration to allow small imports of Russian crude, given the near-term outlook for refineries. Indian refiners have been reducing their purchases of Russian crude. Although observers say that even if India decides to reduce its reliance on Urals, it cannot stop purchases immediately because refiners have already booked Russian cargoes for the next eight to 10 weeks and canceling these orders is not feasible, but this does not eliminate uncertainty over Nayala’s fate. “My sense is that India will still be bargaining with the US to import a certain amount of oil from Russia, particularly the Nayala refinery,” said Prashant Vasisht, senior vice-president at ratings agency ICRA. Energy expert Narendra Taneja said India will also continue to import oil from Russia, albeit in lower volumes. “India will continue to receive oil supplies from Russia for two reasons: to maintain its strategic autonomy and to maintain the correct perspective on domestic political consumption,” he said. “Since India has to procure $500 billion from the US in five years, importing oil, natural gas and LPG is the best way to increase volumes quickly and overall it is not a bad idea as the returns we will get back (capital, technology and greater access to the US market) are very attractive,” he said. According to data from the Indian Ministry of Commerce, nearly one-third of India’s crude oil imports come from Russia, with purchases falling to US$2.7 billion in December 2025, the lowest monthly shipments in the past three years, and a decrease of nearly 27% from the US$3.7 billion recorded in November. Despite the decline, Russia remained India’s largest crude supplier in 2025-26, accounting for 31.5% of purchases worth $105.1 billion between April and December.

Electronic product output increased 6 times in 11 years, export volume increased 8 times: Government | India News
NEW DELHI: The smartphone in your pocket increasingly carries a ‘Made in India’ context, as do many of the electronic components that power daily life. India’s electronics manufacturing industry has grown dramatically over the past 11 years, with output rising about six-fold and exports rising eight-fold, the government told India’s parliament on Friday, adding that India was now the world’s second-largest mobile phone maker. Electronics production increased from about Rs 1.9 billion in 2014-15 to nearly Rs 1,130 crore in 2024-25, while exports increased from about Rs 0.4 billion to about Rs 3.3 billion during the same period, Jitin Prasada, director of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, said while sharing official data in the House. Mobile phones have been the biggest growth engine. Production has increased significantly from about Rs 0.2 billion in 2014-15 to about Rs 5.5 billion in 2024-25, while exports have surged from nearly Rs 1,000 crore to nearly Rs 2 billion, an increase of more than 100 times. The government attributes much of this momentum to the large-scale electronics manufacturing production-linked incentive scheme launched in 2020. Under the plan, mobile phone production will increase from Rs 214 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 550 crore in 2024-25, while exports will expand from nearly Rs 030 crore to Rs 200 crore. Officials also said India has transformed into a net exporter of mobile phones, reversing its status as an importer a decade ago. Prasada told Parliament that the Mobile PLI scheme has attracted investments of over Rs 15,000 crore and created over 1.7 lakh additional jobs by December 2025. He added that the IT hardware PLI 2.0 launched in 2023 has so far generated a cumulative output value of over Rs 16,500 crore, with an investment of approximately Rs 857 crore and created nearly 4,800 direct jobs. India is strengthening its position as a reliable global electronics manufacturing hub as factories expand and exports grow steadily, the government said.
Trade deal poses threat to Indian interests: CPM | India News
New Delhi: “As details of the India-US trade deal slowly emerge, it is becoming increasingly clear that the sweeping concessions made by the BJP-led government to the US in the so-called interim deal pose a serious threat to India’s economy, agriculture and national sovereignty,” CPM said on Sunday.“ It reiterated its demand that “the details of the agreement be brought to parliament and made public”. The party said in a statement that the government must be forced to “stop signing any agreement that harms the interests of Indian workers and farmers…”.
Dipankar Bhattacharya, liberation general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), said: “The trade agreement framework represents a mild capitulation by the Modi government to Trump’s directives. It is a blatant attack on India’s sovereignty, autonomy and the rights and livelihoods of our farmers.”
India, Canada strengthen security cooperation | India News
New Delhi: In NSA Ajit Doval’s first bilateral visit to Canada since the diplomatic conflict over the killing of Khalistan separatists in 2023 rocked relations between the two countries, the two sides agreed to develop a “joint working plan” to guide bilateral cooperation on national security and law enforcement issues and achieve “practical cooperation” on their respective priorities. It is reported that Doval has strongly expressed to Canada that violent extremist groups should not receive any form of support from the Canadian government. According to reports in India, both sides acknowledged progress on initiatives to support the security of their respective countries and citizens. The national security adviser met with India’s National Security Adviser Nathalie Drouin on Saturday, a visit the Indian government said was part of regular bilateral security dialogue. Doval’s visit to Canada is seen as an important confidence-building measure ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India next month, despite several recent high-level interactions between the two sides, including a visit by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand to India. According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both sides agreed that each country would “establish security and law enforcement liaison officers and their respective agencies would establish working relationships”. “This important step will help streamline bilateral communications and allow for the timely sharing of information on issues of mutual interest to Canada and India, such as illicit drug flows, particularly fentanyl precursors, and transnational organized crime networks,” the statement said. Anand told TOI during his visit that Canada is taking a two-track approach with India: actively engaging in law enforcement dialogue to address security issues and expanding cooperation on trade, technology and energy. The visit also saw both sides launch a new roadmap to reinvigorate economic ties amid growing global uncertainty. The two sides also committed to formalize cybersecurity policy cooperation and information sharing on cybersecurity issues, consistent with domestic laws and international obligations, and continue negotiations on anti-fraud and immigration enforcement cooperation. Doval also met with Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree on Friday.
Starmer’s top aide resigns over Mandelson’s fallout, pressure mounts on Prime Minister
LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned, his chief of staff Morgan McSweeney said in a statement on Sunday, as Starmer faces increased pressure over his appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States.Starmer is facing what is widely seen as his worst crisis of 18 months in power over his decision to send Mandelson to Washington in 2024 after documents revealed his relationship with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The departure of McSweeney, a 48-year-old political strategist who played a key role in Starmer’s rise to power, raises questions about the future direction of the government, less than two years after Labor won one of the largest parliamentary majorities in modern British history.Polls show Starmer is already deeply unpopular with voters, and with some in his own party openly questioning his judgment and future, it remains to be seen whether McSweeney’s exit will be enough to silence critics. McSweeney said he was right to resign because Starmer appointed Mandelson on his advice.“The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson is the wrong decision. He undermines trust in our party, our country and in politics itself,” McSweeney said. “When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make such an appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice.” Starmer has spent the last week defending McSweeney, a tactic that is likely to raise further questions about his own judgement. Starmer said in a statement on Sunday that it was “a privilege” to work with McSweeney.New evidence about Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein has emerged over the past ten days, opening old wounds for Starmer and his Labor Party and triggering a police investigation into Mandelson’s alleged misconduct in public office. Documents show the former ambassador leaked government documents to Epstein in 2009 and 2010. Labor MPs in parliament had called for McSweeney’s resignation, accusing him of appointing Mandelson. Many MPs have called for Starmer to resign. Opposition Conservative leader Keimi Badenock said: “Starmer must take responsibility for his terrible decision.”Reuters
‘Fuel starved’ trainer jet lands in wild India news
New Delhi: A training aircraft was forced to land in an open field about 50 to 70 kilometers away from its destination Belagavi as it ran out of fuel on Sunday. Although the aircraft was damaged in the impact, the flight instructor and trainee pilot on board were both safe. Aviation authorities are investigating the incident. “The Cessna 172 (VT-EUC) aircraft of Red Bird Flying Training Institute, while on a cross-country flight from Kalaburagi to Belagavi, made an emergency landing near Vijayapura on Sunday due to suspected fuel shortage… DGCA/AAIB will conduct further investigation,” the Aviation Minister said in a statement. The aircraft was manufactured in 1975. The flight distance from Kalaburagi to Belagavi is shorter, about 300 kilometers. The inquiry will look into the cause of the plane’s fuel shortage. The Civil Aviation Administration of China briefly suspended Red Bird operations in October 2023 after a series of accidents, all of which were non-fatal. Operations resumed after detailed inspections by regulators. With a fleet of 48 aircraft, Redbird is one of the largest flight training schools in India.
Indian Space Research Organization study shows there is a safe zone near the moon’s Musemons for Chandrayaan 4 to land India News
Bangalore: Scientists from YisroIndia’s Space Applications Center (SAC) has identified a promising landing zone in the moon’s rugged south polar region for India’s first lunar sample return mission, Chandrayaan-4. Detailed topographic studies using images from the Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter High Resolution Camera (OHRC) have identified a one square kilometer area near Monsmuthun as the safest landing option. The study, conducted by Amitabh, K Suresh, Ajay K Prashar, Kannan V Iyer, Abdul S, Shweta Verma Trivedi and Nitant Dube, has been accessed by TOI.Chandrayaan-4 will be ISRO’s most complex lunar mission. The spacecraft will include a propulsion module, a descent module, an ascent module, a transfer module and a reentry module. The descender and ascender must soft-land on the moon, collect samples and launch them back into lunar orbit for return to Earth.Choosing the right location is crucial. Engineers must ensure that local slopes are gentle, that there is at least 11-12 days of adequate sunlight, clear radio visibility to the Earth, and that hazards such as craters and boulders are minimized. The lander design limits the acceptable slope to about 10° and requires boulders to be smaller than 0.32 meters.Early assessments based on rough data highlighted several candidate areas between 84° and 90° south latitude. This new work focuses on five areas around Mouton of Mons, analyzing them using sharper OHRC stereo images with a resolution of 32 cm. One of the sites was abandoned because it was permanently in shadow. The researchers generated a digital elevation model with a 0.32-meter fine grid and studied terrain relief, lighting patterns and hazard distribution. Parameters such as average slope, height range and number of safe landing grids of 24 x 24 meters were compared at four locations marked MM-1, MM-3, MM-4 and MM-5.Among them, the MM-4 region with -84.289° north latitude and 32.808° east longitude has become the leader. The lowest danger level is 9.89%, the average slope is 5°, and the maximum number of safety grids is 568. The area also provides good lighting and limited shadows from nearby terrain. The risk is higher in other locations. MM-1 and MM-3 recorded hazard levels of over 12%, while MM-5 provided only 72 safety grids within the target area. The sites range in elevation from 4,800 meters to more than 6,100 meters, reflecting the fractured topography of the moon’s south pole.Scientists say the analysis shows how high-resolution imaging can guide precise landing decisions. The OHRC’s data allowed them to map craters, boulders and slopes with a clarity not achieved in earlier missions. If approved by the landing site selection committee, the MM-4 patch will be India’s first attempt to bring back lunar debris. Success would make ISRO one of the few space agencies capable of returning extraterrestrial samples, opening a new chapter in the country’s planetary exploration program.
