The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has written to the cricket directors of all eight teams in the Hundred, warning them not to discriminate against Pakistani players in the 2026 auction. The letter comes after the BBC revealed it had seen a message from a senior ECB official to an agent indicating interest in Pakistani players would be limited to teams not affiliated with the Indian Premier League (IPL). Half of the top 100 teams – Manchester Supergiants, MI London, Southern Brave and Sunrisers Leeds – are partly or fully owned by the companies that control the IPL teams.

Pakistani players have not played in the IPL since 2009, following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. All six teams in South Africa’s SA20 are owned by IPL franchise groups, including the four teams that have invested in Hundred. Not a single Pakistani player has taken part in the tournament for four seasons. Indian teams in the International T20 League and Major League Cricket have not signed Pakistani players.Last year, the ECB sold 49% of its shares in each of its 800 franchised stores. 67 players from Pakistan, including 63 men and 4 women, have signed up for the hundred-man auction to be held on March 11 and 12. Pakistani players Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Muhammad Nawaz and Naseem Shah all signed up for the highest men’s base price of £100,000.In an email to teams, the ECB warned that teams would face disciplinary action if there was evidence of discriminatory practices in recruitment this season. However, a Pakistani agent told Telegraph Sport that “it is a given” that Pakistani players will be left out of the Indian-owned squad.

Mistaken identity? The 57-year-old Gurudwara chef kidnapped and murdered was not the intended target
Avtar Singh (file photo)

Avtaar Singh, a 57-year-old Sikh temple volunteer, was kidnapped and killed in California earlier this month, authorities said. He was found dead days after he was reported missing.Shockingly, officials have now confirmed that Singh was not the intended target of the kidnapping that led to his death.San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow told local media that Singer was not the intended target of the kidnapping and homicide.“This was not a random act,” Willow said. “They were targeted by another individual for a specific reason, and we hope that reason will come to light.” Authorities have not released further details about Singer’s motive or how he ended up in Napa County.Singh, a long-time attendant and cook at the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parkash complex in Tracey, was reported missing on the afternoon of February 17 after he was abducted from the temple premises. Surveillance video reviewed by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office showed Singer with a white SUV and three people wearing dark clothing, and he appeared to be inside the vehicle against his will. Later that night, his wife called authorities when he didn’t come home. The couple’s six-month-old triplets were found alone in their residence inside the temple complex, according to KTVU. Singer’s body was found three days later near Lake Berryessa in Napa County, nearly 100 miles and about a two-hour drive from Tracy. The vehicle involved is believed to be at the scene. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the development on Monday, “It is with deep sadness that we confirm that kidnapping victim Avtar Singh has died. Our detectives are working tirelessly to investigate this case and identify those responsible for this horrific act. “San Joaquin District Attorney Ron Freitas addressed the gurdwara congregation and called Singer an innocent victim. “He takes no responsibility for the evil that happened to him,” Freitas said, urging anyone with information to come forward and stressing that “someone saw something, someone knows something.”Singh is well known in the Sikh community for his service and humility. He served for many years in institutions associated with Damdami Taksal, including residing at Sri Tracy’s residence and serving as a cook. Community members describe him as reliable and selfless, someone who can be trusted to fix anything around the property. A fundraiser organized to support his family said he was known for his “humility, quiet devotion and loving nature that made everyone feel like family”, adding that his absence left a deep void. His funeral is planned to be held at Frye Memorial Church, followed by prayer and a community meal at the Visitor’s House. Investigators continue to investigate the circumstances of the kidnapping and killing and are urging anyone with information to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

Aviation regulator considers tougher fines, safety levels for charter operations

New Delhi: India may soon rank non-scheduled operator licenses (NSOPs) or charter and private jet operators based on their safety records after two crashes involving small charter planes in a month killed 12 people. While the ranking is intended to be published on the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) website, operators will now have to compulsorily disclose “critical safety information on their websites, including aircraft age, maintenance history and pilot experience”. This is done to ensure people are “fully informed” of the standards of the aircraft they charter. In addition, there will now be harsher penalties for operators who violate aircraft or crew usage regulations. While pilots found to be in violation of Flight Duty Time Limits (FDTL) or attempting to land below safety minimums may face a license revocation of up to five years, operators who fail to meet compliance standards will have their licenses revoked. The regulator met on Tuesday with all NSOP or charter/private jet operators to “address the recent surge in aviation accidents” and stressed the “urgent need for increased focus on safety”. The meeting identified non-compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), inadequate flight planning and training deficiencies as the main causes of the accident.Following the meeting, the DGCA issued “new measures aimed at implementing a zero-tolerance policy against security compromise within the NSOP sector.” These include:Put security ahead of business interests: Regulators have instructed that safety must supersede any commercial considerations, charter commitments or VIP movements. It reiterated that the captain’s decision to divert, delay or cancel a flight for safety reasons is final and must be respected by operators without commercial consequences.Strengthen oversight and accountability: Apart from DGCA’s safety ranking of NSOP and the latter’s disclosure of its fleet and crew information, the regulator will also intensify random cockpit voice recorder (CVR) audits and cross-verify fuel records and technical logs to detect unauthorized operations or falsified data. Managers and senior leaders will be held personally accountable for systemic breaches and safety lapses cannot simply be blamed on pilots,” the regulator said. Monitoring of older aircraft and aircraft that have changed ownership will now be intensified. NSOPs that operate their own maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities will be audited. “Those found to lack adequate capabilities will be required to outsource maintenance to an approved organization.”The regulator found that weather-related accidents “are often caused by errors in judgment rather than the unpredictability of weather”. Operators must establish a real-time weather update system and strictly adhere to established standard operating procedures. Additionally, pilots’ recurrent training must place greater emphasis on weather awareness strategies and decision-making in uncontrolled environments. To address systemic weaknesses in decision-making and ensure operational discipline, regulators are implementing several emergency measures. “The message from NSOP operators was clear: either comply with all norms 100 per cent or hand over the license and go home. They have to comply or else they will be out of business,” a senior official present at the meeting said.

Three days, two games, a year older: Harry Brooke proves his credentials in Palleke's 'Night'

TimesofIndia.com in Kandy: As the saying goes, “Tough times don’t last, but strong people last.” It syncs perfectly with Harry Brooke.Over the past few months, the England white-ball captain has been in the news not for his batting excellence but for his off-field antics. Last year, he got into an argument with a nightclub bouncer in Wellington during the one-day series against New Zealand. On the night of the altercation, Brooke and England team-mate Jacob Bethell were filmed drinking, with the video later posted on social media.

Brooke later lied to the media, claiming he was alone when he was assaulted by a nightclub bouncer during England’s pre-Ashes tour of New Zealand. He later admitted it was a lie because there were others with him and he lied to protect them. Brook was subsequently fined around £30,000 and the England Cricket Board (ECB) issued a final warning over his future behaviour.Brooke had a frustrating display in Australia’s Ashes, reaching fifty only twice in ten innings. The then 26-year-old went on to score 358 runs in five Tests at an average of 39.77 in the 2025-26 Ashes Test season. In the last two games of the ongoing T20 World Cup, Brooke, who celebrated his birthday just a few days ago, has shown signs of maturity with both the bat and the acumen on the field, which is crucial for a great leader.

Against Sri Lanka at Pallakele in Kandy, his defensive total was just 147, but his bowling changes and field placement were on point. It was his bat that did the talking when his team came under huge pressure against Pakistan on Tuesday. Between those two games, Brooke has aged a year and grown in leaps and bounds as a leader. After a brilliant century on a track where his teammates struggled, the England white-ball skipper admitted it had been the “toughest” few months for him as a cricketer.“To be honest, this has probably been the toughest winter of my life,” he told reporters after England’s decisive two-wicket win over Pakistan. “There’s a lot behind the scenes and out of it, but yeah, it’s nice to see some reward for all the hard work I put in away from the ground.”the chosen one

Brooke made his international debut four years ago in a T20I match against West Indies. His chart has been going up ever since. He is undoubtedly the face of ‘Bazball’, the ultra-aggressive, high-risk and aggressive style of play adopted by the England men’s Test cricket team under captain Ben Stokes and head coach. Brendan McCallum. After scoring his maiden T20I hundred on Tuesday night, Brooke revealed that it was coach McCullum’s idea that he should bat at No. 3 against Pakistan, citing his good record against Pakistan. “Baz was the mastermind there. He and I were talking this morning about how to increase the order and try to maximize the power, and thankfully, it paid off,” Brooke said with a smile on his face.Under McCullum, Brooke developed as a cricketer first. Now, this anointed one is also growing into a leader. McCallum supported the young man when he went through difficult times. Earlier this month, ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup, McCallum praised Harry Brooke for the way he handled the controversy but admitted his white-ball captain was still a “work in progress” away from the cricket field.“He’s had a tough time off the field recently but he’s a strong lad who’s been able to put that aside and still lead these boys in the same way he did before and show the great tactical awareness he has as a cricketer,” McCullum said after England’s Harry Brooke-led side won the ODI series 2-1 and swept Sri Lanka 3-0 in the T20.“I do sometimes think people think Brooke isn’t that smart. I totally disagree with that. His wisdom is light. He has a very good tactical cricket mind.“He’s improving off the court. He’s not alone and it’s our job to help him through it. But on the court, he’s definitely doing great right now.”The body keeps growing

Harry Brooke hit ten fours and four sixes in his brilliant knock against Pakistan and the batsman also hit nine doubles, something never seen before in Brooke’s batting skills. On the last ball of the power play, Mohammad Nawaz drove the ball flat over the stumps. Brooke uses the depth of the crease to step back and push the delivery straight back over the bowler’s head. There was a charm to that shoot. He did hit three more, but that flat shot sent a signal to the Pakistan camp that although they had taken the lead in the match thanks to Shaheen Shah Afridi’s wicket burst in the power play, England were still in the game as their captain was not going to give up easily. He did agree that after he was out with Shaheen Shah Afridi, he started reminiscing about the Oval Test when Nawaz took two wickets quickly in the 19th over, in which Mohammed Siraj turns things around for India.“I thought it was going to be another Oval game against India. Thankfully we managed to get over the line and Joff hit the boundary at the end. But yes, it was a bit tight there and like I said, luckily we got the win,” he said.

Jamie Overton

Recently, former England captain Michael Vaughan slammed Brook for not stepping up in the big game. He did respond to Warne’s criticism with a knock, before saying: “To be honest, it’s not even on my radar. I just go out and try to win cricket for England and the team I play for. Thankfully I managed to do that tonight and our main goal is to get to the semi-finals.”Brook also grew as a captain in the locker room and earned the respect of the senior pros. After the win over Sri Lanka, left-arm spinner Liam Dawson was all praises for the way the young captain operates the spinners. “I thought the way Brooke captained the team today was phenomenal, how he used all of us in different ways,” Dawson, who took three wickets against Pakistan, said on Sunday. After victory over Pakistan, it’s bowling all-rounder’s turn Jamie Overton Big praise for “Skip.” “That was probably one of the best shots I’ve ever seen. Full credit to Brook. He put his hands up and hit three and he was up front today. Hopefully he can continue to play for us in the next few games,” Overton told reporters in the mixed zone.“It’s a great feeling to be part of a cricket side from the way he approaches cricket. He wants us to go out and play, have a smile on our face and enjoy cricket. That’s when we were playing growing up. We want to go out and have fun. It feels like we’re out there having fun now. He’s set the standard for what we want to do and if he keeps playing like this, we’ll go far in this competition,” Overton added.

Moments later, in the post-match press conference, the issue of Jos Buttler’s poor form came into focus. Buttler has now scored 62 runs in six innings. He has not played more than 40 innings in his last 18 international matches.“He is a powerhouse in world cricket. He has done it at every stage. He won ODIs and T20 World Cups and it was just a matter of time,” Brooke defended his senior pro.“Honestly, I think people have to give him a little leniency. He’s played over 500 T20 games, he’s played over 150 games for England and he’s still averaging 35 and has an attack rate of 145. He’s arguably our best player and he just isn’t hitting them through the middle at the moment. But, yes, I think people probably need to go a little easier on him.”In these three days, Brooke has not only grown a year older, but has also become wiser, which is indeed a great sign for England.

An IndiGo aircraft had taken off eight minutes before the air ambulance crashed. “Within minutes of takeoff, when the Indigo was about 37 kilometers from Ranchi airport, it asked to turn right to avoid weather,” sources said.Unfortunately, in this weather, the small air ambulance crashed just eight minutes after the relatively large passenger plane flew away safely. TimesofIndia.com in Chennai: It was business as usual for the Indian cricket team as they conducted an intense training session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday. The batsmen bowled long overs and the bowlers kept the pace with extended spells before flexing their muscles with a range over. The only unusual incident at this meeting was Linku Singh absent. As the Times of India website reported earlier, the left-hander has rushed home to be with his ailing father and it is unclear if he will return. Not because of Rinku’s absence, but discussions have certainly taken place and will continue to take place regarding the ideal batting combination for the crucial match against Zimbabwe on February 26.

India starting line-up: A headache for Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar Yadav

was A humiliating defeat to South Africa in their first Super Eights match In Ahmedabad, India are under immense pressure to fix their batting issues in the remaining matches. As expected, the discussion centered around breaking the mold of the left-handed batting order. There are too many lefties in India The opposition has cracked the code Counter the men in blue by using off-spin effectively. Just like in Ahmedabad, the first batsman to hit the net is the wicketkeeper-batsman Sanzhou Samson And whether the think tank injects him into the highest order remains to be seen.threesome Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan Tilak Varma is yet to be sacked en masse and the continued poor start has left the management in a bind. Do they send the out-of-form Samson back to the top of the order or reshuffle the batting order by promoting Suriya? No possibility can be ruled out at this stage, and even online transactions point in this direction. Tilak and Surya batted together and when the left-hander batted, the coach Gautam Gambhir and experienced players Jasprit Bumrah Pay close attention behind the net.

The two hitters swapped their usual punches every time they exchanged strikes. The India skipper kept his young partner in good spirits while they stayed out for over an hour – facing a lot of spin before moving to the other net, which featured net bowlers and Indian seamers Ardeep Singh and Mohammad Siraj.Bumrah was also present, but just like in Ahmedabad, he preferred to engage in skill-based drills with Morne Morkel in the practice nets. In his short but intense innings (no more than 20 minutes), the bowler attacked the stumps consistently and received constant feedback from his coach. India’s match lasted just over four hours before the grounds crew returned to treat the training pitch and generously water the concourse.

The playing surface will be a centre-wicket and is expected to be different from the lackluster surfaces we have seen in the tournament so far. Batsmen are sure to enjoy their time in the middle and dew is likely to become a big talking point. Two days before the match, when the Indian team was conducting its final training session around 9 pm, there was too much dew. This wasn’t a big factor in India’s game and it’s something they might experience if the Men in Blue finish second. The run-up to the match is expected to be a low-key affair for the defending champions as they plan to train in the afternoon while Zimbabwe train under the lights. In Ahmedabad, just four players trained under the harsh sunshine and a similar attendance is expected on Wednesday. The press conference is expected to give some hints about the lineup, and it doesn’t look like a public situation at this point.
