Nancy lives in Catalina Foothills, a community northeast of Tucson filled with residential properties tucked into the desert and highland landscape. The surrounding environment of her home is steep and the terrain is vast and dangerous.

New challenges and technical setbacks

Catalina Foothills is a combination of federal and state managed lands as well as private residential properties. These areas include portions of the Coronado National Forest through the Santa Catalina Mountains and Saguaro National Park.

Rocky slopes, narrow canyons, and desert vegetation, including bunchweed, palo verde, mesquite, creosote, and saguaro, make up a large portion of the public areas.

As a result, the terrain makes it difficult for ground and air forces to effectively comb the area. These attempts were made more difficult by the area’s frequent temperature swings and occasionally limited visibility.

To make matters even more difficult, the doorbell camera inside the house had been disconnected before she disappeared. Additionally, she does not currently have a subscription, so detectives cannot retrieve any valuable footage from it.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos The lack of clear camera evidence is “disappointing” and has slowed the identification of potential persons of interest, said the Associated Press in an interview.

Search development so far

Nanos told reporters at a news conference Thursday that investigators believe she was “out there” and taken against her will.

“Actions against her will include possible kidnapping or hijacking. She was unable to walk 50 yards on her own,” Nanos said.

A neighbor around her home reported seeing an unmarked white van parked on the same street as Nancy’s home.

On February 7, authorities discovered surveillance footage that may have shown a “vehicle of interest” inside the Circle K store, the New York Post reported. The vehicle was located at or near a Tucson convenience store, NBC News reported.
