'Be prepared for exemplary costs': SC condemns MP Jairam Ramesh's office memo challenging Center

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday reprimanded Congress MP Jairam Ramesh for challenging an office memorandum issued by the Center to implement the Supreme Court judgment on retrospective environmental cleanup.Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said since the purpose of the office memorandum was to implement the Supreme Court’s judgment, the challenge was actually against the judgment itself.“Be prepared for model cost. We know the design behind this,” a committee headed by CJI Surya Kant said.“Can the judgment be challenged through a writ petition? This is only for media consumption,” the bench added. When the Supreme Court warned of the model costs, Ramesh withdrew his plea.In May last year, the Supreme Court had dismissed the Centre’s office memorandum allowing ex post facto or retrospective environmental clearance for projects violating norms, holding that the right to live in a pollution-free environment is part of the fundamental rights.“The federal government, like individual citizens, has a constitutional duty to protect the environment,” the court said, adding that it “must come down hard” on the Center for trying to do “something that is wholly prohibited by law”.It further stated that “cleverly, the words ex post facto” were not used, but if these words were not used, there would be a provision that would effectively grant an “ex post facto EC”. The issuance of OM 2021 is contrary to the ruling of this Court…”Accordingly, the Center is prohibited from issuing directions for granting ex post facto permission in any form or manner or regulating violation of environmental impact assessment notifications.

Early visa processing helps missions coordinate within these quotas and make travel arrangements for large groups of pilgrims.

Before a Hajj visa is finalized, pilgrims must meet several prerequisites:

  1. Biometric verification: Most countries require pilgrims to complete a biometric registration (fingerprints, photo) before visa approval. This process is sometimes facilitated through mobile apps or visa support centers.
  2. Health Checks and Vaccinations: In many countries, a medical examination and necessary vaccinations (such as meningitis vaccine and other immunizations prescribed by Saudi Arabia) are prerequisites for the issuance of a visa.

The SMS Stadium was renovated in 2006, but the venue has not received any upgrades since then, and although it continues to be used for IPL matches, it feels somewhat like it is frozen in time. Concerns remain over whether its infrastructure and safety measures, including evacuation norms and operational readiness, are adequate to handle the large crowds expected at modern IPL matches. The venue last hosted a T20I on November 17, 2021, and it has been more than a decade since it last hosted an ODI on October 16, 2013.The Royals are understood to have highlighted serious deficiencies in the stadium’s infrastructure. “From civil work to emergency evacuation, there are serious public safety concerns and the royal family has conveyed all information to the RSSC, BCCI and IPL Governing Council,” the source added.Since June last year, the franchise has repeatedly raised concerns regarding public safety (particularly life safety, structural integrity and statutory compliance) in all areas of engineering and operations with the RSSC, BCCI and IPL authorities in compliance with prevailing regulatory norms and standards. As RCA continues to be disbanded, the Royals, through a letter to the BCCI, requested guidance from the governing body and received approval. The last time Royals were forced to move their home games out of Jaipur was during the 2014 and 2015 IPL seasons. This was due to the RCA’s notorious governance volatility, internal friction and leadership gridlock.RCA downturnGovernance at the RCA has been in a downward spiral, with no elected body under a series of ad hoc committees for nearly two years. While the IPL Governing Council has allowed Jaipur to host the tournament in previous years, it has issued a stern warning: the city will lose its right to compete in the 2026 IPL if the RCA fails to hold elections.Despite the ultimatum, RCA remained mired in internal strife. A leadership vacuum has also hampered the development of the RCA’s own stadium, which is expected to be the third largest in the world. The previous regime under Vaibhav Gehlot received a grant of Rs 100 Cr from BCCI in 2023, but after his resignation and temporary takeover, the construction work was abandoned. Dedicated cricket grounds remain the only long-term solution as multi-purpose SMS stadiums become obsolete.

WWW inventor says artificial intelligence may be more powerful than its creators
“Must be universal”, P 5

Artificial intelligence plays an exciting role in areas such as drug discovery, scientific advancement, and disease treatment. But Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist and inventor of the World Wide Web, warned that given the speed at which artificial intelligence is developing, there is a real possibility that artificial intelligence will become more powerful than its creators. Berners-Lee said humanity must figure out how to deal with superintelligence, offering a warning at a time when companies and governments appear to be racing to develop artificial intelligence without really considering the consequences.

‘The biggest AI summit’: Ashwini Vaishnaw says India AI Impact Summit got ‘amazing response’

In an interview with Jaya Bhattacharji Rose, Berners-Lee described ChatGPT as a “phase change” that surprised him with its conversational capabilities. The key question, he emphasized, is who AI works for. He argued that assistants should serve the best interests of users — similar to a doctor’s role — rather than corporate incentives. He links this to his Solid project and the company’s work on user-controlled data “pods,” which aim to restore agency by giving individuals control and selective sharing of their personal data, including in child-safe configurations with parental supervision.Berners-Lee also contrasted the democratic ethos of the early web with today’s platform-dominated experience. Initially, individuals can publish their own websites and participate on an equal footing with major institutions.

Manchester United boss says Britain is 'colonized' by immigrants: Jim Ratcliffe sparks outrage; PM Keir Starmer demands apology
Sir Jim Ratcliffe sits next to Sir Alex Ferguson/Manchester United

Sir Jim Ratcliffe placed the cat among the pigeons. In an interview with Sky News, the billionaire from Monaco and Manchester United The co-owner claims Britain has been “colonized by immigrants”, linking immigration to welfare dependency and national decline. The comments sparked political condemnation, unease among fans and a disturbing reckoning with the travesty of one of the world’s most international football clubs.

What Sir Jim Ratcliffe said

Sir Jim Ratcliffe made a single, continuous argument linking immigration, welfare and population growth in an interview with Sky News. Here’s the full paragraph that sparked the backlash:“You can’t have an economy with nine million people on welfare and a huge influx of immigrants. I mean, Britain was already colonized. It costs too much money. Britain has been colonized by immigrants, really? I mean, the UK population was 58 million in 2020 and now it’s 70 million. That’s 12 million people. “Structure is important. Immigration is described as a financial drain, welfare as choice rather than circumstance, population growth as evidence, and “colonization” as the conclusion that ties it all together.

Who he is – and why Monaco matters

Ratcliffe is the founder of Ineos, the richest man in the UK, and the most influential figure in the leadership of Manchester United after the minority stake acquisition. He is also a resident of Monaco, a low-tax jurisdiction synonymous with elite mobility. The decision was legal, but it affected people’s perceptions. When people who do not pay UK income tax talk about the financial burden on the country, critics argue that the argument cannot be separated from the privilege of making it.

Why Ratcliffe’s data is wrong

The controversy intensified as the figures failed to withstand scrutiny.During this period, the UK population did not jump from 58 million to 70 million. Around 2000, the UK population reached approximately 58 million. By 2020, the population was close to 67 million, reaching about 70 million just a few years later. Compressing decades of demographic change into a recent population boom distorts reality.Welfare claims are equally misleading. Despite high welfare levels in the UK, immigrants are, on average, more likely to be in work than the UK-born population. Available data do not substantiate the claim that immigrants choose welfare over employment.

How the UK political and media ecosystem is reacting

Keir StarmerBritish Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the comments offensive and wrong, saying Britain was a proud, tolerant and diverse country and that Ratcliffe should apologize. The focus is on the responsibilities of public figures, not on suppressing debate.Piers MorganBroadcaster Piers Morgan responded directly on So he’s a notorious race-baiting hypocrite. “Tommy RobinsonFar-right activist Tommy Robinson used the moment to express selective outrage, claiming media and political outrage over Ratcliffe was overshadowing attention on other scandals he had prioritized.

How did Manchester United fan groups react?

The worst discomfort comes from within football. The Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) warned that such language could alienate supporters and undermine the club’s inclusive identity, stressing that United’s past and present are inextricably linked to diversity and immigration.Manchester United’s Muslim Supporters’ Club said the comments echoed language from historically marginalized communities and could make fans feel unwelcome at the club they consider home.Football’s anti-racism body Kick It Out said the comments were divisive and inconsistent with the values the sport has worked hard to promote for decades.None of these responses suggested that immigration policy should be criticized. They were concerned with tone, symbolism, and institutional accountability.

Why irony is inevitable

Manchester United is a product of immigration. Its greatest teams were formed by players born outside England. Its current lineup spans every continent. Its global revenue relies on fans reaching far beyond the borders of the UK. Cross-border mobility is not an accidental factor in a club’s success. This is fundamental. For a co-owner of such an institution, describing immigration as “colonization” is not only contradictory. It exposes the disconnect between the forces that created modern excellence and the narratives used to explain national anxieties.Manchester United’s history and present are inextricably linked to immigration. The modern club was relaunched by Eric Cantona, globalized by Cristiano Ronaldo, led by Peter Schmeichel, led by Irish-born Roy Keane and anchored by Nemanja Vidić, Patrice Evra and Edwin van der Sar. and other figures defined in the Ferguson era. This dependence has not gone away. The team currently uses Bruno Fernandez as the creative axis, and the main offensive players come from Matthews Cunha and Brian Mbemo. Remove the immigrant players from Manchester United and you don’t get a weaker version of the same club. You get a completely different club – one that has been stripped of the power to make it modern, competitive and global.

bottom line

Ratcliffe’s formulation – clumsy, inaccurate and provocative – is at the heart of Britain’s current immigration debate.Anxiety about immigration has been the most powerful political force reshaping Britain for years. It is the driving force behind the rise of reformism in Britain, the erosion of traditional party loyalties, and the perception among voters that elite institutions talk about issues rather than talking about them. It’s also why Keir Starmer remains personally unpopular despite winning the presidency – caught between a base of voters demanding moral clarity and voters demanding straight answers. What makes Ratcliffe’s intervention important is not its originality but its origin. When a billionaire industrialist, football boss and establishment insider speaks out about rhetoric once restricted to fringe politics, it’s a sign that the Overton Window has changed. Language that might have ended careers before is now being circulated in prime-time interviews. This does not suggest that the claim is correct. Ratcliffe’s figures are wrong, his framing is careless, and his metaphors are rich. But the reaction to his remarks — like the remarks themselves — revealed a country in which immigration is no longer a matter of policy details but a matter of national self-understanding.In this sense, Ratcliffe does not spark new debate. He reveals how far the old man has gone.

Bharat Bandh: Rahul Gandhi supports workers, farmers; mocks PM Modi

New Delhi: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi Thursday in support of nationwide protests by workers and farmers demanding protection of their rights. He expressed concerns over labor reforms, trade policy and potential changes in the rural employment scheme MGNREGA.“Workers fear that four labor laws will curtail their rights. Farmers fear that trade deals will harm their livelihoods. Weakening or repealing MGNREGA could take away the last lifeline for villages. Their voices are ignored when decisions are taken that affect their future,” he posted on X.“Will Modi listen now? Or is his ‘control’ too strong? I stand firmly with workers and farmers on their issues and struggles,” Rahul added. The pan-India general strike called by ten Central Trade Unions (CTUs) and supported by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Thursday was aimed at opposing a host of government policies, including four labor laws, privatization and contractualization measures, the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, MGNREGA amendments and the proposed Seeds Bill.Massive participation by farmers, agricultural workers and industrial unions is expected at protest sites across the country, and will also be joined by power sector employees, PRTC staff and other workers’ organizations. The strike seeks repeal of four labor laws, the Electricity Bill 2025, the Seeds Bill 2025 and the VB-G RAM G Bill 2025, among others, SKM said in a statement. Cione was reportedly the last person to see the Today show host, Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, before she was taken away. The octogenarian had dinner with Sioney’s wife, Savannah’s sister Anne, the night before Sioney was reported missing, and it was Sioney who reportedly walked her home. As interest in Cione grew, his personal life also came under scrutiny. This has attracted people’s attention ceoni band Early Blake and bandmates Dominic Evans and Walter Gonsalves.

There have been many theories about Evans’ alleged criminal past, and speculation only intensified after the FBI released video footage of potential suspects outside Guthrie’s door the night she disappeared. While the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have not yet released the names of any suspects, agency director Kash Patel reported there are currently persons of interest in the case. Among them, claims that Dominic Evans was summoned for questioning went viral.

What is certain is that the claim was shared on social media through an unverified profile. Here’s the truth behind these claims.

Dominic Evans called to ask? The truth behind the claims

The claim that Evans had been summoned for questioning was widely shared on the Facebook page. “‘That’s him!’ Police have summoned Tommaso Scioni’s bandmate Dominic Evans for questioning and sources say he has confessed…” one post read.

Another post was also shared with the same title. They got quite a few reactions, with some saying Evans looked like the masked figure, while others pointed out the facial features didn’t match.

Regardless of these claims and speculations, from what authorities have told the public, Evans has not been called for questioning in Guthrie’s case. One person was detained yesterday but was later released, but it was not Evans.

The Sheriff’s Department said they are speaking with the person who last saw Guthrie before she disappeared. The claims about Evans only stem from his connection to Sione. Former NewsNation reporter Ashley Banfield had earlier reported that Cione was a suspect in the case, but authorities have retracted that report. However, that hasn’t quelled social media speculation about Guthrie’s son-in-law or his former bandmates.
