SC bans NCERT books with chapters on 'judicial corruption'

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday banned a Class 8 social science textbook containing a chapter on judicial corruption, barring its circulation in any form and asked the school education minister and NCERT chairman to explain why contempt proceedings were not initiated against them, even as the Center offered an unqualified and unqualified apology for the fiasco. On the second day of hearing in the case, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta began by apologizing for the “unforgivable mistake” committed by the two authors of the book and said the government had decided to permanently ban them from participating in the preparation of any textbooks.

-

However, the SC said it would not accept an apology at this stage and would inquire whether there was a deliberate and calculated design to discredit the agency and damage its reputation. SC: Ensure all hard or soft copies are seized and removed from public access A shot was fired senselessly and the judiciary bled. The aim is to defame the judiciary by telling students, parents and teachers, and society at large, about corruption. As the head of the institution, it is my duty to protect the institution from such horrific and baseless insinuations,” CJI Kant said.A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi ordered: “NCERT, in coordination with the Union and state education departments, ensures that all copies of books (hard or soft) currently in circulation, whether stored in warehouses, retail outlets or educational institutions, are confiscated and archived for public compliance.” Further, it said, “NCERT The Director and the principal of each school to which the book arrives are personally responsible to immediately seize and seal all copies of the book on their school premises and to file a compliance report. Make sure that no guidance is given based on the subject book. Chief secretaries of all states are required to comply. ” It asked NCERT to submit compliance documents within two weeks.“As an adequate precaution, a blanket ban is hereby imposed on any further publication, reprinting or digital dissemination of the book. Any attempt to circumvent this order by electronic means or by changing the title shall be deemed as direct interference, willful violation and contempt of instructions,” it said. The bench headed by the CJI directed NCERT to disclose the names of the persons entrusted with writing the textbook, their qualifications and submit the minutes of the meeting during which the content of the book was considered and finalized. The court posted the matter for further hearing on March 11.The judge said the book described corruption in the judiciary through several complaints against judges, deliberately giving the impression that the judiciary failed to act on these complaints. The Attorney General said the way the book quoted the pending figures and mentioned that “justice delayed is justice denied” seemed to be telling children that justice was denied in India. He said nothing could be further from the truth.Senior advocates Kapil Sibal, AM Singhvi and Vikas Singh termed this section of the textbook as shameful and carefully planned and designed to selectively target the judiciary to malign its image. CJI Kant said politicians, bureaucrats and other professionals are often convicted for various crimes but the judiciary is under blatant attack. He said: “The author forgets that the judiciary has played an important role in protecting the constitution and fundamental rights of citizens and has passed a series of orders to protect democracy in the past 75 years, not to mention the important role of the judiciary in providing free legal aid to poor and marginalized groups in society. The CJI said that on the day of the news report, the SC general secretary had sought clarification from the NCERT director.

Eid al-Fitr 2026: How employees can turn a 4-day holiday into a 9-day holiday
Eid al-Fitr 2026 in the UAE: How to start a 9-day dream vacation from a 4-day holiday

as eid al-fitr Eid al-Fitr is coming to an end Ramadan In the United Arab Emirates, residents and workers are already planning how to make the most of official policies in 2026 holiday period. With the UAE government confirming a four-day Eid al-Fitr public holiday, there is growing interest in using the annual leave strategically to create a longer festive break, potentially turning just a few days off into a nine-day holiday in March 2026.Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar, marking the end of Ramadan and traditionally a time for prayers, family gatherings, travel and community celebrations. In 2026, the timing of Eid al-Fitr depends on the appearance of the new moon towards the end of Ramadan, but whether Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, most residents will enjoy at least a four-day weekend. This holiday creates the perfect opportunity to combine the Eid holiday with weekends and annual leave to maximize your holiday in the UAE.

Eid al-Fitr official holidays in UAE 2026

According to the Federal Gazette and UAE labor authorities:

  • Public sector employees will be on holiday from Thursday 19 March 2026 to Sunday 22 March 2026.
  • Private sector workers will officially be furloughed from Thursday, March 19 to Saturday, March 21, 2026, with the possibility of extending to Sunday, March 22, if Ramadan ends for 30 days.
  • The official working time for most return journeys is Monday 23 March 2026.

This structure means that even without annual leave, UAE residents can enjoy at least four days off during the Eid al-Fitr weekend, a rare opportunity for a meaningful seasonal break.

Changing Eid al-Fitr 2026 from four days to nine days holiday: How it works

Smart planning strategies widely discussed among travelers and professionals in the UAE include linking annual leave with the Eid holiday and the regular weekend before it. This is the typical approach:

  • Start early: Please take advantage of your annual leave between Monday 16 March and Thursday 19 March, preferably before the Eid holiday is declared as HR will receive a large number of leave requests during the festive period.
  • Weekend advantages: Combine this with the previous weekend (Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15).
  • Public holidays: This is followed by the official Eid al-Fitr holiday (March 19-22).

This will allow you to take nine consecutive days off from Saturday 14 March 2026 to Sunday 22 March 2026, while using only three to four days of your annual leave. This vacation plan is particularly attractive to travelers, families looking to explore, and expats planning a trip back to their home country or region during a meaningful cultural moment. It also fits into the broader trend towards experience-focused travel and maximizing work-life balance.Eid is not just another day of rest, it is a religious celebration marked by public prayers, donations and social gatherings. Time off allows families to reconnect, fulfill cultural obligations, and participate in holiday activities. Make the most of this long holiday and provide space for travel, spiritual reflection, or quality rest.

Planning Eid al-Fitr 2026 around variable moon sightings

Since Islamic festivals follow the lunar calendar, the exact start of Eid al-Fitr is traditionally confirmed through official moon sightings. However, the arrangements for the 2026 holidays by the UAE authorities are such that regardless of whether Ramadan ends on 29 or 30 days, residents will still enjoy substantial Eid holidays. This certainty encourages people to plan their holidays early and book flights or accommodation in advance. Many UAE residents are already responding to the announced dates by planning short trips within the GCC or nearby countries, taking advantage of the nine-day window or family vacations at leisure destinations across the UAE, including beach, desert and cultural retreats, or trips back home, taking advantage of the extended break to reconnect with relatives and celebrate Eid traditions abroad.Tour operators and travel agencies are also starting to release carefully curated itineraries for longer holidays, highlighting coastal, cultural and regional holiday options to suit different budgets and interests.

Eid Al Fitr Holidays 2026 Strategic Planning Recommendations

To make the most of the Eid holidays 2026 –

  • Asking for leave in advance: Submit your annual leave application as soon as possible, especially if you want peak travel dates.
  • Coordinating time off with family or team: Coordinate vacation days with family or coworkers to avoid scheduling conflicts.
  • Monitoring Lunar Observations Announcement: Closer to March 18, official lunar observations will confirm the exact start time of Eid al-Fitr so that final travel arrangements can be made.
  • Plan travel logistics early: High demand during Eid may cause hotels and flights to sell out faster, so planning ahead can lead to better options at lower prices.

Eid al-Fitr 2026 public holidays in the UAE are from March 19 to March 22 (for federal entities) and from March 19 to March 21/22 (for the private sector), depending on the length of Ramadan. Strategic use of annual leave before and during Eid al-Fitr can turn a four-day weekend into a nine-day holiday from March 14 to March 22, 2026. Many residents are planning trips, staycations and international trips during this extended holiday period, making it one of the most anticipated holidays of the year. Eid al-Fitr remains a profound cultural and spiritual celebration, and the extended holiday provides residents with space to experience tradition and leisure.

Hit rate problem? no longer. India defeats Zimbabwe, breaks record, keeps semi-final hopes alive
Indian Cricket Team (ANI)

Not only did India win on Thursday night, they also produced one of the most complete batting performances in T20 World Cup history. The four hit a total of 256 sixes against Zimbabwe, India’s highest total in this World Cup, with 17 sixes, the joint-most sixes by any player in an Indian T20 World Cup innings, surpassing the 15 sixes they hit against Australia at Grosse Ile in 2024. India have now scored 63 sixes in this World Cup, their highest in a single World Cup, with only West Indies leading them with 66.What stands out even more is collective intent. All six Indian batsmen scored more than 150 runs, making it the first time in the history of the T20 World Cup that six or more players have scored more than 20 runs in the same innings at such a pace. In the entire 20 rounds, there were only 26 penalties, tying the lowest number of complete games in the championship. The pressure never let up and Zimbabwe were forced to chase leather almost throughout.Abhishek Sharma Set the tone. After recovering from illness, he found his rhythm with a 26-ball 50 in three games to reignite India’s attack. Sanzhou Samson Provides early fluency, Ishan Kishan Keep the momentum going, then Hardik Pandya Tilak Varma delivered the fatal blow. Pandya went on to remain unbeaten with an unbeaten 50 while Tilak, whose strike rate was questioned, scored 275 runs with 44 off 16 balls. India scored 80 runs in the last 5 overs to put the game out of reach.Zimbabwe had its highlights too, with Brian Bennett’s unbeaten knock of 97, the second-highest individual score against India in a T20 World Cup after Chris Gayle’s 98 in 2010. Bennett’s attack included a 26-run loss to Shivam Dube, who had conceded 46 runs in the first two overs, becoming the highest bowler at this stage of the T20 World Cup tournament. In the bigger picture, it was India’s rediscovery of their attacking identity after a humiliating loss to South Africa. Six points, field goals and minimal penalties reflected a team that quickly adjusted and fought back with authority to keep their semifinal hopes alive in determined fashion.

Who is Borge Brende?

Borge Brende Born on September 25, 1965, he entered Norwegian politics early as a member of the Conservative Party. He served as Minister of Environment from 2001 to 2004, Minister of Trade and Industry from 2004 to 2005, and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2017. He also represented the South Trøndelag region in parliament from 1997 to 2009. He studied economics, law and history at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

Brende joined the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2008 as Managing Director. After serving as Secretary General of the Norwegian Red Cross from 2009 to 2011, he returned to the Forum in September 2017 as Chairman and CEO. He has led the World Economic Forum, known for its annual Davos meetings, for more than eight years, supporting greater international cooperation.

He also worked hard to improve the way the organization operates during his tenure. In April 2025, forum founder Klaus Schwab resigned as chairman following an internal review. In August 2025, André Hoffmann and Larry Fink were appointed co-chairs to oversee reforms aimed at improving transparency and governance.

How Brende was linked to Epstein

The controversy surrounding Brende began after the Justice Department released a trove of documents related to Epstein.

Jeffrey Epstein Convicted in 2008 of paying a minor for prostitution. In 2019, he committed suicide in prison while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

The newly released documents include iMessage chats and other communications between 2018 and 2019 between Blonde and Epstein. According to the report, documents show that they held three formal dinners over two years and exchanged multiple emails and text messages.

Their discussion included mention of Davos and other possible attendees. The messages also show that Epstein portrayed himself as someone with ties to powerful global leaders.

In a message sent after the dinner in 2018, Brende wrote: “Thank you for a very interesting dinner… You were a wonderful host. Warmly, Borge,” later adding, “Miss you, Mr. Borge.”

In another exchange, after Epstein described advice he gave to a Middle Eastern leader, Brende responded: “Agreed. I’m glad you gave him advice.”

Before the additional documents were released, Brendel publicly stated in November 2025 that he had never met Epstein.

After the documents became public, he revised his statement to say he was unaware of Epstein’s criminal background and that their interactions were limited to three dinners over two years.

Other sources suggest that Epstein sought introductions and influence associated with the World Economic Forum, often citing Davos as a key point of contact with global leaders.

Norwegian media later asked Brende about the gaps between his previous public statements and what the documents showed. The situation raises questions about judgment and background checks, especially since Epstein was convicted in 2008 and his past has been widely reported.

Brende’s resignation is seen as an important moment for the World Economic Forum as it works to improve governance and rebuild public trust.

Indian youth ranked 60th among 84 countries in mental health study

NEW DELHI: Young Indians rank 60th out of 84 countries on key mental health parameters, scoring significantly lower than their peers aged 18-34 in most parts of the world, according to a 2025 report from an ongoing global mental health study. The ‘Global Mental Health 2025’ report released by US-based Sapien Labs on Thursday not only reveals the severe mental health crisis faced by India’s youth but also reveals a huge generational gap as the mental health scores of the elderly are significantly higher.

-

The report, which surveyed more than 78,000 people with internet access in India, gave young adults (18-34 years old) a Mental Health Quotient (MHQ) score of 33. This contrasts with the MHQ score of 96 for people aged 55 and over, a level consistent with normal mental functioning and ranking 49th out of 84 countries. The stark disparity highlights a “structural, multi-generational shift” in mental health that researchers believe is more than just a temporary effect of recent events such as the pandemic.Tara Thiagarajan, founder and chief scientist of Sapien Labs, said: “These scores reflect a sharp decline among younger generations, greater than the decline seen in many other countries around the world. While those over 55 are doing well, younger adults are seriously struggling.”“This reflects declines in the factors we outline in our study, as well as a number of others, as well as increases in toxic loads in the environment (air, water, food) and lack of physical activity,” she added. The study said the mental health crisis among young people in India goes beyond issues such as anxiety and depression and reflects a broader decline in core psychological functions, including the ability to regulate emotions, maintain attention, build stable relationships and recover from stress.Based on data generated in previous years, the study identified four key drivers of mental health – family bonds, spirituality, consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and early exposure to smartphones. In India, 64% of respondents in the 18-34 age group reported being close to family, compared with 78% of those aged 55 and above.Although relatively low compared to some other countries, regular UPF consumption among India’s youth (44%) is much higher than among the older generation (11%). The average age of first smartphone in India is 16.5 years, and for the Alpha generation, this number is expected to be much lower as early exposure to smartphones increases mental health risks.Globally, young people in economically developed countries are more likely to suffer from mental health difficulties than those in less developed countries, research has found. Countries at the bottom include Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and China, while countries with relatively better mental health outcomes are mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Tanzania. Finland consistently ranks high in the World Happiness Index, ranking 28th for mental health among people over 55 and 40th for mental health among people aged 18-34, suggesting that satisfaction with life circumstances is not the same as the mental ability to cope with life’s challenges. The Mental Health Quotient is an indicator that summarizes respondents’ ratings of 47 cognitive, emotional, social and physical abilities and issues that affect our ability to function effectively. Sapien Labs says the scale reflects a person’s basic mental abilities.

Ramadan UAE staycations 2026: You can book popular resorts before Ramadhan with exclusive discounts
What UAE staycations have to offer during Ramadan 2026

as Ramadan With 2026 just around the corner across the UAE, the Ramadan staycation travel trend is growing, attracting the attention of residents and tourists alike. With cooler weather, reimagined hospitality experiences, and the spirit of the holy month in the air, more and more people are choosing to turn their weekends or short breaks into a reflective and refreshing staycation experience, especially before Suhoor, the early morning meal before daily fasting. This creative shift towards leisure is reshaping how people think about travel and leisure during Ramadan and is quickly becoming one of the most talked about domestic travel trends in the UAE.Unlike traditional holidays, Ramadan staycations focus less on partying and more on family, food, reflection and community, blending meaningful experiences with relaxation. These short breaks (usually a night or two) are becoming a popular way to balance the rigors of fasting with the opportunity to relax, explore new surroundings, and enjoy shared moments with loved ones.

Why stay at home during Ramadan trend In the UAE in 2026

For many residents, Ramadan changes daily routines, such as waking up early to fast, long periods of fasting, and special nights with iftar. This shift naturally leads to a slower pace of life, and staycations offer a structured and peaceful break from the stress of the workday. People use these mini-vacations to recharge their bodies and minds, allowing them to experience the spirit of Ramadan more fully. Unlike longer vacations that require planning meals and activities around busy tourist attractions, a Ramadan staycation encourages introspection, connection and opportunities to enjoy natural beauty, quiet spaces and time with family.A unique aspect of a Ramadan staycation is waking up before dawn to enjoy suhoor in a peaceful setting. Many residents choose scenic locations or quiet resorts where they can savor their pre-fast meal in a calm, beautiful setting, whether gazing at an ocean view, a desert landscape, or simply enjoying an open-air space away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The focused staycation atmosphere enhances the spiritual significance of Ramadan, providing the opportunity to eat suhoor in a tranquil environment away from daily life in the metropolis. This sense of calm is a big draw for those who want to make the most of the holy month.Ramadan has always been a time of community and togetherness. Staycations provide opportunities for family gatherings, group iftar meals and shared fasting experiences, thereby strengthening social bonds. Extended families, friends and even colleagues book a weekend getaway together not for nightlife but to share cultural and spiritual experiences rooted in the traditions of Ramadan. This trend is particularly resonating with younger residents and families who want to escape the daily routine of the city but still cherish the sense of occasion that Ramadan brings.

Defining the Ramadan Staycation Experience

While brands and specific properties are not the focus here, the types of experiences people are looking for during their staycation during Ramadan are growing:

  • Scenic sunrise suhoor – Rather than rushing to eat at home before dawn, many people choose scenic spots, seaside areas or desert locations where they can enjoy a peaceful suhoor surrounded by nature or panoramic views. The stillness of the morning becomes part of the experience itself, a time to reflect, express gratitude and prepare for the day of fasting in an unforgettable setting.
  • Iftar Landscape – Once the sun sets, iftar is often even more special when done outside the usual home environment. Many staycationers are looking for scenic spots to enhance the iftar experience, from quiet seaside spots to slightly elevated hideaways that can see the colors of the sunset on the horizon.
  • Cultural and spiritual engagement – A Ramadan staycation isn’t just about the scenery, it’s about culture, heritage and meaning. Some residents combine their vacation with visits to local heritage sites, cultural parks, or simply spend time in quiet neighborhoods where traditional Ramadan customs and community events are more evident.
  • Wellness and Mindfulness – The combination of fasting, spiritual practice and reflective rest has made health-oriented staycations increasingly popular. Many travelers seek out natural spaces for gentle walks, seaside sunrises, or quiet reading time, all of which contribute to physical and mental health during a month of fasting

Iconic and unique staycation options across the emirate

The diversity of UAE staycation offerings during Ramadan 2026 reflects cultural focus and creative travel season thinking, with offers and experiences that go far beyond a standard hotel room.

  • Desert Serenity and Upscale Resort: A popular option for UAE residents looking for a true escape from their daily lives is to head to the empty desert. For example, a desert resort located in Abu Dhabi’s rugged terrain offers summer discounts and perks such as dining credits, room upgrades and a quieter pace, perfect for evening prayers, meditation and quiet fasting under the stars. These desert accommodations cater to UAE residents’ desire to balance spiritual reflection with natural beauty, turning a traditional hotel experience into something closer to a resort.
  • family fun and themed adventures – For families, especially those with children, themed resort accommodation in Dubai is a compelling option during Ramadan. Hotels within the main entertainment district offer accommodation and entertainment packages that include access to theme parks, water play areas and dedicated seasonal activities, as well as Suhoor and Iftar options. Another family-friendly option is the LEGO-themed hotel located in one of Dubai’s family entertainment hubs, which offers themed rooms and seasonal activities for kids, making your Ramadan night an unforgettable holiday while enjoying peaceful moments of reflection and prayer.
  • Urban comfort and convenience and culture – In Dubai Investment Park, a popular hotel offers HALA Ramadan packages to make your stay in the city stress-free. Special Ramadan Dining and Inclusive Experiences

What sets these Ramadan staycations apart from typical travel deals is that suhoor and iftar are integrated into the accommodation itself. Many hotels deliver Suhoor to guest rooms or in scenic communal dining spaces before dawn, meaning guests do not need to prepare or rush to eat before commencing their fast. Iftar is often a carefully curated buffet or set menu that uses seasonal flavors and draws on traditional and regional cuisine to appear both familiar and festive. Some hotels even offer special Ramadan amenity packages, tranquil lounges or late-night lounges where guests can gather, have breakfast together, and enjoy gentle conversation or cultural performances. By integrating food and accommodation, the hotel appeals to those who want to pray, eat and enjoy peaceful nights stress-free during Ramadan.Ramadan staycations can book up quickly, especially on weekends and during the pre-Ramadan period, as many residents seek scenic or quiet spots. Traveling during fasting periods (especially in the afternoon) can cause fatigue, especially on long drives, so scheduling travel before dawn or after iftar can increase comfort and safety.Choose a destination or activity that complements the spirit of Ramadan, a tranquil beach, a cultural attraction, a sunset or a place with open space for peaceful reflection. Whether with family or a small group of friends, Ramadan staycations are often more meaningful when shared, turning suhoor and iftar into collective memories.Ramadan staycations in the UAE are set to be a major trend in 2026, especially pre-fasting breaks to provide tranquility and reflection. These mini getaways blend cultural significance, family connection and relaxation to create meaningful experiences during the holy month. This trend reflects broader changes in domestic tourism, experiential travel and cultural engagement in the UAE. Planning early and choosing a quiet, scenic setting can make your Ramadan staycation truly memorable.
