Agents investigating ‘out of an abundance of caution’

Two law enforcement sources familiar with the scene at Graham’s home said federal agents were continuing to investigate his death out of an abundance of caution, NBC reported.

However, there has been no new evidence of foul play since his death on Saturday night, according to reports.

What happened before Graham died suddenly

The senator from South Carolina died Saturday night from what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness,” two days after celebrating his 71st birthday and just hours after returning from a trip to Ukraine.

Emergency crews responded to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence around 8:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports that Graham was in cardiac arrest, according to police scanner audio obtained by NBC News.

Earlier Sunday, a senior staff member told NBC News there was no indication that Graham was unwell before his unexpected death and that Graham had no known health issues.

cause of death

United States Senator Lindsey Graham died of “aortic dissection” caused by cardiovascular disease, according to preliminary findings from the Washington, D.C., medical examiner’s office. Aortic dissection is a tear in the aorta, which carries blood to the body.

A spokesman for Graham said the death certificate would be pending “all toxicology and microscopy testing” being completed.

However, prominent figures in the MAGA movement soon began to float theories about Graham’s death, with right-wing firebrand Laura Loomer citing his recent trip to Ukraine and his advocacy for tougher sanctions on Russia.

“Yesterday, Lindsey Graham was in Ukraine… calling for more sanctions on Russia and pledging more U.S. support for Ukraine,” she said on X. “One day later, Lindsey Graham is dead. There needs to be an investigation!”

There is no evidence to support MAGA’s claims, and the authorities have not pointed to any foul play.
