Asha Sharma was born in 1989 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. Her parents were divorced and her mother worked in a department store, India Today reported. As a teenager, Sharma gained work experience on a golf course.
The Xbox CEO received a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management in 2011. While at the school, she also took the initiative to lead a community program designed to support at-risk youth in Brooklyn.
After completing her studies, Sharma started her career in Microsoft Marketing where she worked for two years. In 2013, she moved to Porch Group as Chief Operating Officer.
Sharma joined Meta in 2017 after a four-year tenure as head of product for Messenger and Instagram Direct, as well as general manager of calling, video and kids experiences (as her LinkedIn profile states).
In 2021, Sharma was named Instacart’s chief operating officer (COO) and will remain with the company through its 2023 public offering.
In 2024, she returned to Microsoft as president of CoreAI products, overseeing Azure AI, machine learning systems, and various other artificial intelligence products, before taking on the role of executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft Gaming (now known as Xbox) in February of this year.
