The study found that precipitation continued to decrease starting in the late 13th century BC. Winter rains are crucial for agriculture in much of the eastern Mediterranean, but they have fallen in some parts of the region. The reconstructions do not represent a few isolated drought years but instead indicate a sustained shift in climate conditions towards drought. Researchers say such prolonged droughts could reduce water availability and reduce agricultural productivity in societies that rely heavily on seasonal rainfall.

Drought puts stress on complex societies

Agricultural production was the main economic sector of the Bronze Age kingdom. Wheat and barley required continuous rainfall during the winter, and they had to rely on surpluses from agricultural production to feed their growing populations, armies, and administrative systems.Researchers say continued drought leading to poor harvests could lead to famine, financial crises and competition for resources. It reveals that the dramatic changes around 1200 BC were caused not by a single factor but by multiple factors.
