Who is Robert Carroll? NYPD officer shot to death by 18-year-old in Brooklyn; Mamdani breaks silence
An NYPD officer was shot to death after an 18-year-old suspect opened fire in Brooklyn. Detective Robert Carroll was shot in the back, but his bulletproof vest prevented serious injury, officials said.

“His bulletproof vest performed exactly as designed and it saved his life today,” Police Chief Jessica Tisch said, according to ABC7.
The suspect is detained.
Who is Robert Carroll?
Carroll is a detective with the Sex Offender Monitoring Unit. He was rushed to Kings County Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Fox News reported. Sources say he is less than two weeks away from retiring, according to the New York Post.
Another officer suffered injuries to his face and shoulder during the incident.
mayor of new york city Zoran Mamdani X posted that he visited Carol in the hospital.
“Early this morning, Detective Robert Carroll was shot and killed in the line of duty in Crown Heights. I visited Detective Carroll in the hospital today and am grateful that his ballistic vest protected him from a more serious injury. I will keep him and his loved ones in my thoughts as he recovers.” Mamdani wrote.
“I’m grateful to Detective Carroll and every member of the NYPD who worked hard to keep New Yorkers safe during the busy holiday weekend,” he added. “Every New Yorker finally deserves to go home safe. My administration will continue to use every tool at our disposal to stop the scourge of gun violence and keep illegal guns off our streets.”
shooting
Surveillance video The suspect was filmed firing at least one shot at a passing SUV. The Kia Sorento’s front and rear windshields were damaged as well as the rear passenger side window, ABC7 reported.
Authorities said several NYPD officers were inside the unmarked SUV in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood around 4:10 a.m. Sunday. When the 18-year-old suspect approached the vehicle, officers got out of the SUV and tried to talk to him, Tisch said. Three police officers then opened fire, but it is unclear what circumstances led to the shooting.
“We don’t have body camera video of the actual shooting, presumably because it happened so quickly and unexpectedly,” Tisch said.
Police said officers activated their body cameras after the shooting began. The suspect fled on foot and was later captured a few blocks away. Authorities said officers had to use a Taser during the arrest.
