New Delhi: An American man is serving a 25-year sentence for the attempted murder of an Indian-British writer Salman Rushdie Convicted on other federal charges, including providing material support to Lebanese militant groups HezbollahAccording to the BBC.A federal jury in New York on Wednesday found Hadi Matar guilty of participating in an act of transnational terrorism and providing material support to Hezbollah, which is designated a terrorist organization by the United States, Britain and several other countries.Prosecutors argued that Matar’s actions were motivated by a 1989 fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death issued by Iran’s then-supreme leader, as well as comments by former Hezbollah leaders in 2006 urging its execution.Rushdie testified during the trial, describing how he was stabbed 15 times in a 2022 attack that left him partially blind in one eye. He credits a firefighter with saving his life.Matar’s lawyers argued the attack was not an act of terrorism, but a jury found him guilty on two federal charges. He was found guilty of attempted murder in a New York state court and is currently serving a 25-year sentence and may now face life in prison, the BBC reported.
