New Delhi: The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha adjourned indefinitely on Saturday, bringing budget meeting A day earlier, the Center’s proposed women’s reservation bill failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha and decided to postpone the contentious delimitation proposal amid objections from the opposition.Proceedings in the House and Senate ended without any further legislative matters, capping a politically charged session. When the House met at 11 am, Speaker Om Birla read out his concluding remarks, after which he adjourned the Lok Sabha indefinitely.A day after the special session of Parliament began on April 16 and continued with three days of heated debate in both the House and Senate, a constitutional amendment to provide 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies by 2029 by increasing the number of seats in the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816 was defeated due to a divided vote.The Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill received 278 votes in favor and 211 against in the Lok Sabha, falling short of the special two-thirds majority required for its passage. Parliament held a three-day session from April 16 to discuss and pass three key bills – the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Delimitation Bill, 2026 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The government decided to shelve the delimitation bill after the quota legislation failed to pass the House of Representatives, facing strong opposition and a lack of support. All parties reached a consensus.
