Savannah Guthrie She resumed her position on the “Today” anchor desk on Monday after a more than two-month hiatus since her mother’s disappearance.
Savannah wore a bright yellow dress that matched the yellow ribbons and flowers at her mother’s residence. “It’s good to be home,” she said at the start of the show.
In response, today “Yeah, glad you’re home,” said co-host Craig Melvin.
The two anchors then turned their attention to the morning’s headlines, which included an introductory segment on the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. “Okay, ready or not, let’s get started.” Guthrie commented. “Let’s do the news.”
Guthrie, who has been co-anchor of TODAY since 2012, temporarily stepped down in early February after Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home near Tucson. Arizona. Authorities suspect the 84-year-old mother was kidnapped.
Meanwhile, some X users reacted to her clip of the show on social media, with one saying: “Praying for this poor lady. This must be so difficult 😥”.
Another said: “I pray her mother is found alive but unfortunately the longer time goes by the less likely that is.”
However, some critics considered her return to the show “weird” as her mother is still missing.
“I can’t go back to a normal life if my mom is still missing. This is weird,” one person commented.
A second user said, “This is all a scam,” while another commented, “Fake smile.”
Savannah told Hoda Kotb last month that she felt returning to the present day was “part of my purpose now,” though she found it hard to imagine returning to a workplace she associated with “joy and ease.”
Today, co-host Craig Melvin announced Savannah’s return on the March 27 episode of the show, saying, “This is where she belongs. This is where we all wanted her to be. We can’t wait to welcome her back to Studio 1A with open arms.”
During her remarks on Monday’s show, Savannah recognized TODAY fans gathered outside Rockefeller Plaza, some of whom wore yellow pins and held signs with her mother’s photo. “I was so happy to see them and give them a hug. I just felt so much love,” she said.
Nancy Guthrie’s family reported her missing around noon on Feb. 1 after she failed to arrive at a friend’s house for a virtual church service, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said she was last seen having dinner at her daughter Annie Guthrie’s residence around 9:45 p.m. the night before.
