However, the full cost of the conflict Trump launched with Israel on February 28 remains an open question on Capitol Hill, where an initial request for $200 billion in additional funding met with fierce opposition from lawmakers. White House budget director Russell Vought said at a House Budget Committee hearing in April that he had no estimate of the war’s costs while defending Trump’s request for a $1.5 trillion annual military budget.
The proposed budget reflects Republican priorities ahead of November’s midterm elections, as the party tries to retain control of Congress but faces growing voter anxieties about the rising cost of living, soaring energy prices and the financial burden of the war with Iran.
