Parliament will be adjourned on April 2 to meet after the parliamentary vote

New Delhi: Parliament is likely to be prorogued on a fixed date when the current session ends on April 2 instead of adjourning indefinitely as per custom, as the government looks to reconvene the House and Senate to introduce a bill to reserve women’s rights in the directly elected legislature in the next Lok Sabha elections.A senior government official said on Saturday: “We will probably announce a date for Parliament to sit when it adjourns next week.”As consultations within the government are still ongoing, Parliament is likely to convene after polls in four states and one Union Territory close on April 29.The fixed date for the parliamentary session to discuss possible two bills, one for delimitation based on the 2011 census and another to amend the constitutional provision to introduce a one-third quota for women in Lok Sabha and parliamentary seats, would convey the government’s resolve in no uncertain terms. This will add to the buzz during the parliamentary elections as political parties strive to woo female voters and will be an added advantage for the ruling New Democratic Party.
