The Amarillo Regional Office of Emergency Management released statementsaid “Caohe wildfire Porter and Randall counties are currently responding as fire crews continue to be active in the area. “Depending on wind conditions, residents may see smoke from different locations,” they added. Please avoid affected areas where possible and use caution if traveling near emergency response activities. Fire risks are higher due to dry conditions, and the public is encouraged to avoid activities that could spark additional fires, including parking in hay fields, outdoor burning or drag chains that could produce sparks. “

Local news channels noted that people in Amarillo may have smelled something burning, but clarified that nothing was on fire there. “If you smell smoke in Amarillo, it’s coming from wildfires near the New Mexico state line and possibly from fires near Buffalo Lake west of the canyon. As of this writing, there are no wildfires near Amarillo. Fires north of Amarillo and west of the Canadian River Bridge have prompted a Fire Alert in Porter County. Fires near Buffalo Lake have also prompted a Fire Alert in southern Randall County.” wrote.

One person shared a video from a distance where smoke can be seen rising. “Porter County: Grass Fire. I was parked at the intersection of 1061 and 2381 and looking east of Valle De Oro. So as far as I know it is just in open land. This message and video was sent by Cathlina Rivas King. This is separate from the grass fire in the southwest part of the canyon,” they wrote.
