ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Defense Forces Chief Marshal Syed Asim Munir has concluded a three-day visit to Iran as part of Islamabad’s efforts to resolve the conflict between the United States and Iran.
Munir arrived in Tehran on Wednesday leading a high-level delegation to Iran, becoming the first foreign military leader to visit the country since Iran and the United States reached a two-week ceasefire agreement on April 8.
During the visit, Munir held discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and met with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, military media said on Saturday.
He also met with Major General Ali Abdullahi, Commander of Qatam-ul-Anbia Headquarters.
Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also a member of the Pakistani delegation.
The discussions “focused on bringing sustainable peace to the region, with special emphasis on the changing regional security environment, continued diplomatic engagement and cooperative measures aimed at promoting lasting peace and stability in the region,” the Inter-Services Public Relations Department said in a statement.
Munir stressed the need for “dialogue, de-escalation and peaceful resolution of outstanding issues through sustained diplomatic engagement,” ISPR said.
Pakistan’s Army Chief expressed his “deep gratitude” to Iran for the “warm hospitality” extended to the delegation during their visit.
“This visit reflects Pakistan’s firm determination to promote negotiated solutions to conflicts in the Middle East and promote peace, stability and prosperity in the region,” the statement said.
Pakistan has begun preparations to host a second round of high-stakes talks between the United States and Iran next week, officials said on Friday.
The United States and Iran held rare direct talks in Pakistan over the weekend aimed at ending the conflict, but the talks ended without an agreement.
The ceasefire between the United States and Iran expires on April 22.
