70 VA Disability Benefits: Here’s What’s Changing in 2026

Through 2026, a single veteran rated 70% will receive $1,808.45 per month tax-free. However, according to Marca, this number will rise when family members are added.

For example, a veteran with a spouse and three children under 18 could receive $2,367.45 per month, which includes:

Base rate for spouse and one child is $2,074.45

$76 for second child

$76 for third child

$141 if spouse qualifies for aid and attendance

This shows how family status directly affects monthly pay. Additional adjustments for dependent children in school or a spouse needing special assistance can further increase payments.

Many veterans rated at 70% based on the Individual Unemployment Unit (TDIU) may qualify for total disability. This program allows veterans who are unable to maintain substantial gainful employment due to service-related conditions to receive pay at a 100 percent disability rate without having to formally change their rating to 100 percent.

VA Home Loan Advantages

A 70% disability rating makes it easier to qualify for a Veterans Administration home loan, one of the best financial benefits for veterans. Through this program, you can get a home with no down payment, no Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI), easier approval, and no VA funding fees. You can save thousands of dollars just by skipping financing fees.

These benefits reduce upfront costs, making home buying more affordable. Some veterans may also be able to reduce closing costs through lender credits or special loan offers.

Permanent and overall status and future growth

Veterans with long-term or serious medical conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, may receive Permanent and Total (P&T) designation, which provides additional stability and long-term benefit protection. If service-related conditions worsen over time or additional disabilities are approved, a composite rating may result in higher monthly compensation. The annual Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) also helps benefits keep pace with inflation, preserving purchasing power and supporting long-term financial security.

New Delhi: Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan on Saturday lashed out at neighboring countries Pakistan Also mentioned operation sindoorsaid “Victory is not announced by words.” He reviewed India’s defense preparedness and stressed the need to strengthen the national security architecture. He also said that the sense of victory cannot be based on a “dysfunctional air defense system.”General Chouhan, speaking at the inauguration of the ‘JAI Se Vijay’ seminar in Pune, mentioned India’s success in Operation Sindoor and emphasized that “the real Vijay lies in proven evidence”. He said India must conduct a “sober assessment” of its defense systems to prepare for current and future challenges.

CDS General Anil Chauhan links history to border dispute with China, Nehru knew about it

The CDS did not name Pakistan directly but highlighted the losses suffered by India during the counter-terrorism operation launched in May following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025.“As far as the Defense Forces are concerned, victory is not declared by mere words, as some entities in our vicinity have already done, but by proof, as we have shown in Operation Sindoor. The sense of victory cannot be based on the destroyed terror infrastructure, damaged runways, crippled airfields and dysfunctional air defense systems. Such victories or slogans will not last. The real Vijay lies in proven evidence, not verifiable results…” the CDS said.Highlighting future risks, General Chouhan said India’s defense posture for the next decade must be based on a realistic assessment of emerging threats.“Why this is important is because the current defense posture of India for the next decade requires a dispassionate assessment of future scenarios and challenges. I believe it is becoming increasingly competitive, adversarial, combative, fragile and technologically very disruptive,” he added. He also said that in today’s changing global environment, countries can no longer assume permanent friendship or competition and India must be ready to act independently when needed.“Assumptions about permanent friends or permanent rivals are increasingly unreliable. In today’s world, it is difficult to define who is your friend, who is your ally, who is your enemy, and who is your opponent. Therefore, India must be mentally, structurally and materially prepared to act independently if the need arises. “CDS said partnerships remain important but cannot replace India’s own ability or freedom to make independent decisions. He emphasized the need to strengthen domestic defense capabilities and ensure strategic autonomy.Explaining the theme of ‘JAI Se Vijay’, General Chauhan said that in modern warfare, victory cannot be based on rhetoric or symbolic claims but must rely on “argued evidence and verifiable results”. He warned that merely destroying infrastructure or airports would not guarantee a lasting victory.Talking about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s JAI concept, which stands for Union, Aatmanirbharta and Innovation, General Chouhan said it reflects freedom from foreign dependence and outdated thinking. “This is not just a victory over our opponents but equally a victory over inertia, prejudice and institutional comfort,” he said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned the United States on Saturday not to try to interfere in Taiwan, saying such actions could lead to confrontation between Beijing and Washington. In a speech at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Wang Yi warned that the United States may adopt future China policies aimed at “inciting and conspiring to split China through Taiwan and cross China’s red lines.”“This is likely to lead to confrontation between China and the United States,” he said. Wang added that China hopes the United States will adopt a “positive and pragmatic” approach to bilateral relations. “But we are also prepared to deal with various risks,” he said.China considers self-ruled Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to control the island. At the same time, the United States is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and main arms supplier, and Taiwan will be heavily dependent on U.S. assistance in the event of a military conflict with China. In his speech, Wang also commented on China’s tense relations with Japan, which have become strained again since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi took office last October.Referring to political developments in Japan, Wang said, “The Japanese people should no longer be manipulated or deceived by those far-right forces or those trying to revive militarism.”He further warned, “All peace-loving countries should issue a clear warning to Japan: If Japan goes back on this path, it will only lead to self-destruction.”

UAE astronomers issue safety warning ahead of Ramadan moon viewing on February 17
UAE astronomers warn not to see the moon during Ramadan on February 17 due to risk of getting too close to the sun/Representative image

UAE astronomers have issued safety advisories ahead of the expected Ramadan new moon observation on Tuesday, February 17, warning the public not to attempt to observe the moon using telescopes or binoculars due to serious eye safety risks. The Abu Dhabi-based International Astronomy Center (IAC) warns that in much of the Arabian Peninsula, the moon will be positioned very close to the sun at sunset. This rare alignment coincides with a solar eclipse earlier in the day, greatly increasing the risk of accidental exposure to direct sunlight through optical instruments.According to the IAC, pointing a telescope or binoculars at objects very close to the sun without a certified solar filter can cause temporary or permanent eye damage, including blindness.Due to the position of the moon on February 17, any attempt to observe the new moon at sunset is likely to place the sun within or very close to the field of view of optical instruments. Astronomers stress that this poses a real danger not only to observers but also to the equipment, as the lenses and internal components can be damaged by concentrated sunlight.Professional observatories avoid aiming telescopes at objects so close to the sun unless strict safety standards and specialized solar filters are used.

Why is angular distance important?

On the evening of February 17, moon-watching committees from the Arab and Islamic world are expected to search for the Ramadan crescent moon. However, the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon at sunset will be very small. In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the angular distance at sunset is expected to be only one degree. In practice, this means that if the new moon existed, it would be located about half a degree from the edge of the Sun’s disk.Khadijah Al Hariri, Operations Manager, Dubai Astronomy Group said khaliji era Although the eclipse will occur earlier in the day, the moon will still be very close to the sun by sunset. This proximity means that any telescope aimed at the crescent’s expected position will almost certainly capture direct or near-direct sunlight.

Visibility conditions across the area

The International Astronomy Center said the moon would not be able to meet the required visibility conditions across the Arabian Peninsula that night. The moon’s height at sunset is expected to remain below accepted visibility thresholds in several Saudi cities. In Jizan, where the highest altitude record in the kingdom is expected, the moon will be around half a degree high. Elsewhere, the altitude will be less than one degree.Astronomers explain that when the Sun completely sets, the lower edge of the Moon’s disk has sunk below the horizon, leaving no visible crescent to observe. In parts of the western Arabian Peninsula, the moon may set about a minute after sunset. However, experts say this brief interval is still not enough to ensure visibility.

academic and historical perspective

The center also drew on early academic discussions in Saudi Arabia regarding lunar visibility standards.Saudi astronomer Mulham Hindi, a researcher at King Abdulaziz University, previously released data indicating that the moon’s altitude will remain below the acceptable visibility threshold on Tuesday. The statement also quotes medieval Islamic scholar Ibn Taymiyyah, who wrote that a new moon 1 degree apart is not visible. He noted that unless hindered by atmospheric conditions, a separation of about 20 degrees is usually visible.Astronomers said Tuesday’s measurements fell below what classical jurists and modern astronomical standards considered sufficient to confirm the new moon’s visibility. The International Astronomy Center emphasizes the difference between the moon as a celestial body and the visible crescent that marks the beginning of the Islamic month.“The object in the sky on Tuesday was the moon, not the crescent moon,” the statement said.Although the Moon is present every day, visible Hilal can only be seen after the conjunction and when there is sufficient light and separation from the Sun. Verses in the Qur’an that mention the new moon as a time marker are quoted to emphasize that the start of Ramadan depends on the visible crescent, not just the astronomical presence of the moon. The solar eclipse that occurred that day was visible in parts of southern Africa and Antarctica, further confirming that the moon will remain in its crescent phase. Most countries in the Arab and Islamic world are expected to attempt new moon sightings on Tuesday night. If the new moon is not visible, the month of Shaban will end for 30 days and Ramadan will begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026.The astronomers also noted that while their analysis applies primarily to the Arabian Peninsula and nearby areas, visibility conditions may be slightly different in parts of West Africa or the United States due to geographic differences. For now, experts urge the public to avoid unsafe observation attempts and leave technical sightings to trained professionals equipped with appropriate safety filters and equipment.

After Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra faces power vacuum as NCP and alliance enter uncharted waters

“People think we are actively pushing for a merger. This is not true. We have now decided to rebuild our party. The NCP (SP) has resolved the (merger) issue,” Shinde told reporters in Mumbai.“There is no point in discussing a possible merger as there is no leader to negotiate with,” he added, referring to Ajit Pawar, who split the undivided NCP in July 2023 and aligned himself with the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. The Election Commission recognized Ajit Pawar’s faction as the “genuine” NCP.Shinde also referred to his article on the late deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, who was serving his sixth term in the post at the time of his death and was the longest-serving deputy chief minister of the state. The NCP criticized the article published in the February 2026 edition of NCP (SP) mouthpiece Rashtravadi, claiming that the article contained “false and misleading” claims about the circumstances surrounding the Maratha leader’s exit from the party.Shinde wrote in the article that “the manipulation of a network of invisible forces, threats and false accusations” created the situation that forced Ajit Pawar to leave his parent organization, leading to a split in the party founded by his uncle. Sharad Pawar.Clarifying his remarks, the NCP (SP) MLC said he was not suggesting that Ajit Pawar made a mistake. “I’m just saying he wants to correct the divisions in the party,” he said.Meanwhile, Maharashtra minister and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal questioned the need for “day-to-day discussions” on a potential merger.“Sunetra Pawar (Ajit Pawar’s wife) is now the deputy prime minister and will soon become the state president of the NCP. She will discuss the matter and take the call,” Bhujbal said.“When Sunetra Pawar was sworn in as deputy chief minister, there was criticism of the haste. Why is there a similar haste when talking about mergers?” he asked.(with PTI input)

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday questioned Russia’s sincerity in ending the war in Ukraine, as Washington pushes for a quick peace deal.Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Rubio said Moscow’s willingness to negotiate remained unclear as the conflict entered its fifth year.

US humiliates Europeans on their own turf; Rubio skips Ukraine meeting, Munich hits on Zelensky

“We don’t know if the Russians really want to end the war,” he was quoted as saying by AFP.His comments come as a new round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian envoys brokered by the United States is scheduled to take place in Geneva next week. The discussions, confirmed by the Kremlin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s communications adviser, came just days before the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The war continues in diplomacy

The diplomatic efforts come against a backdrop of ongoing fighting. A Russian drone strike in Odessa hit a residential building and killed one person, officials said Saturday. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian missile attack killed two people and injured five others in the Russian border city of Belgorod.Previous U.S.-led efforts, including two rounds of talks in Abu Dhabi, have failed to bridge differences on key issues such as the future of Ukraine’s Donbass region, which remains largely under Russian control.

Let Europe rest assured

In Munich, Rubio also sought to calm European concerns about the transatlantic relationship under President Donald Trump.“We are not seeking division, but rather reviving ancient friendships and reviving the greatest civilization in human history,” he said. “What we want is to revive alliances.”“We want Europe to be strong. We believe Europe must survive,” Rubio added, stressing that the United States and Europe “belong together.”He acknowledged Washington’s tone may have been harsh but said it reflected allies’ demands for “seriousness and reciprocity,” according to the Associated Press. “At a time when headlines herald the end of the transatlantic era, let it be clear to all that this is neither our goal nor our desire,” he said.Rubio also criticized global institutions, saying the United Nations has played “little to no role” in resolving major conflicts, including the war in Gaza. His speech, which took a softer approach than last year’s speech by U.S. Vice President Vance, came as European leaders called for renewed trust and greater defense responsibilities within NATO, with the war in Ukraine becoming a focus of discussion.
