India shifts to annual anti-drug campaign, aims to eradicate elephantiasis by 2027

NEW DELHI: In a major push to eliminate lymphatic filariasis, the Center on Monday launched its annual mass drug administration campaign across the country in 12 endemic states, marking a decisive shift in strategy to achieve the elimination target by 2027.Launching the campaign, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda said the shift from twice-yearly to annual centralized rounds of drugs is aimed at improving compliance, enhancing surveillance and overcoming last-mile gaps that have slowed progress in several districts.Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, is a mosquito-borne disease that damages the lymphatic system and can lead to irreversible swelling of the limbs, hydrocele, disability and social stigma. The disease remains endemic in 348 districts across 20 states and union territories.Although 143 districts have successfully stopped mass drug administration after completing transmission assessment surveys, nearly half reported infection levels still above the elimination threshold. Data from the Ministry of Health show that more than 620,000 people suffer from lymphedema and more than 120,000 people suffer from hydrocele in endemic areas. This round of annual drug management is being implemented in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, covering 719 blocks in 124 districts. The goal is to reduce microfilariae prevalence to less than one percent, the benchmark needed to interrupt transmission.India has committed to eliminating filariasis as a public health problem by the end of 2027, three years ahead of the global target. Officials said the redesigned annual campaign will allow for uninterrupted monitoring, especially during the monsoon months when drug delivery and follow-up are traditionally affected.Addressing state health ministers and senior officials, Nadda said filariasis is not just a medical condition but a disease that erodes livelihoods and plunges families into long-term financial hardship. He stressed the need for direct observation of drug consumption, enhanced vector control and sustained community engagement to combat public hesitancy. The program also refocused on morbidity management, including hydrocele surgery and care of patients with chronic swelling. Such surgeries are covered under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance plan and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are expected to support early detection and follow-up care.Steady progress over the past decade, including improved drug compliance and expanded regional coverage, has laid the foundation for India to eventually become filariasis-free, officials said.

New Delhi: Pakistan Spinning Mills Usman Tariq After his triumphant performance against the United States in the 2026 T20 World Cup, he was once again at the center of a heated debate over his bowling action, with India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin stepped in to defend the bowler amid mounting criticism online. T20 World Cup | Sahibzada Farhan on India vs Pakistan match: ‘Not one-sided’

“Even football no longer allows players to take a time-out during a penalty run-up. How is this okay? Action – all good. But a time-out? The same goes for passing the ball. This cannot be more serious,” Goswami wrote.Ashwin, however, offered a different perspective, agreeing with the football analogy but arguing that cricket’s rules often impose disproportionate restrictions on bowlers. “Agree football doesn’t allow this! While a batsman can switch or reverse without informing the umpire or bowler, why is the restriction restricted to the bowler only after committing to bat on one side?” Ashwin wrote on social media. “In fact, a bowler is not allowed to change his/her bowling arm without informing the umpire. They should change this rule in the first place.”According to ICC rules, a bowler’s elbow extension must not exceed 15 degrees between the arm reaching horizontal position and the point of delivery – a guideline often cited in criticism of Tariq online. The spinner, who has previously come under scrutiny, insists the bend in his arm is natural.

A debate in the Guyana Parliament took an unexpected turn when MP Vikash Ramkissoon responded in fluent Hindi after an opposition MP questioned his knowledge of the language. The exchange began when an opposition member claimed that Ramkissoon did not understand Hindi. After seeking permission from the Speaker, he said he would respond directly to the remark in Hindi.Ramkissoon addressed the House of Representatives, naming opposition members and issuing an open challenge. He said he was ready to debate on any subject at any venue of his opponent’s choice, including television, and the discussion could be conducted entirely in Hindi without reference to notes or documents.“No matter what you want to do, the main answer is not to read the newspaper.” (They decide the topic and I respond without paper), he said.He spoke calmly but firmly, claiming no excuse for his fluency in Hindi. The moment caught the attention of lawmakers in the room and quickly resonated beyond the chamber. The video went viral on social media and received thousands of views. Many users praised Ramkissoon’s conducting, describing the moment as a powerful example of cultural representation and linguistic diversity in governance. He further accused the opposition of using “coded language” to divide society and claimed that the party’s philosophy advocates equality before God. “It’s a tradition I follow,” he said.A large number of Guyana’s population are descendants of Indian indentured laborers, and although English is the official language, Hindi remains culturally important within the Indo-Guyanese community. The move comes amid re-warming of relations between India and Guyana. In November 2024, Prime Minister Modi visited Guyana. This was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in more than 50 years and was warmly welcomed by the Indian and Guyana society. “IndiGo will operate flights as per new pilot duty norms from today:” DGCA | News India

New Delhi: indigo Starting from Wednesday (February 11), flights will be operated in accordance with the requirements of the new pilot safety flight duty regulations. The exemption granted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to the airline’s Airbus A320 family pilots from complying with Flight Duty Time Limits (FDTL) lapsed on Tuesday. In early December 2025, the airline also took the same step to revive its collapsed flight schedule as IndiGo canceled thousands of flights during the month, affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers during the peak travel month.“IndiGo has informed the DGCA that it should be fully prepared to comply with legal provisions and implement the approved FDTL plan after the expiry of the exemption. IndiGo further stated that all necessary operational, scheduling and monitoring arrangements are in place to ensure full compliance with the approved FDTL plan from February 11, 2026,” DGCA said in a statement on Wednesday.Sharing the “latest status”, the regulator said the one-time exemption was granted to IndiGo on December 5, 2025 “in view of the large-scale flight disruption faced by the airline in early December 2025… to stabilize flight operations and safeguard the safety and interests of passengers”. The exemption “is valid for a limited time until February 10, 2026.”“…the exemption is granted subject to certain conditions such as submission of hourly flight operations data and weekly/fortnightly operational performance reports to the DGCA. During the validity period of the exemption, IndiGo’s flight operations are closely monitored through regular review meetings with the DGCA. In addition, the DGCA has deployed officials at various airports to oversee passenger handling and address passenger inconvenience. In addition, the Indigo Aviation Operations Control Center is also equipped with Flight Operations Inspectors (FOls) to conduct real-time monitoring of flight operations to ensure continuous supervision during the exemption period. ” the statement added.

What exactly destroyed the Indus Valley? It's not a war, it's a slow death from drought

The Indus Valley Civilization may not disappear all at once. Long, recurring droughts may have slowly weakened one of the world’s earliest urban societies, new research suggests. Cities like Mohenjo-daro and Harappa were once built around reliable rivers, but as water became harder to find, they seemed to be in trouble. As conditions worsened, people began to move away, settlements declined, and daily life became uncertain. It’s astonishing that something as mundane as rainfall can so profoundly affect the fate of an entire civilization. The researchers believe the damage lasted for decades, with early changes so slow that they were barely noticed at first.

How the Indus River Basin is building smart cities along the river

as quoted Science Daily In a study titled “Scientists finally uncover the cause of the collapse of the Indus Valley Civilization,” the Indus Valley, also known as the Harappan civilization, was very advanced for its time. Cities are more than just piles of bricks; they organize streets, complex drainage systems, and water management systems. Experts say the association had trade links as far away as Mesopotamia. They even developed a script, although we can’t see it today. But life is never easy. Even with such ingenious engineering, civilization still relied heavily on the Indus River. When the flow of the river changes, the entire system begins to shake. Experts say climate change, especially rainfall patterns, could slowly make the area harder to live in.

How Long Has Drought Slowly Destroyed the Indus Valley?

Scientists studying this question used computer climate simulations spanning thousands of years. The simulations reportedly showed a steady decline in rainfall between 5,000 and 3,000 years ago. Some droughts apparently lasted for more than 85 years. There was no reliable water for a long time.It seems that as the drought continues, people are getting closer to remaining water sources. But eventually, even these areas could not sustain large populations. The city began to empty out. A particularly long drought reportedly occurred about 3,500 years ago, coinciding with widespread abandonment of key sites. Archaeologists believe this is the moment when civilization truly began to collapse.

Stone and soil tell the story of drought

To check the model, the researchers looked at stalagmites and stalactites in regional caves. When growth slows, it usually means less rainfall. They also examined lake sediments. Both seem to match the simulation very well. It’s as if the environment left a diary in the stone and dirt of what exactly happened.According to reports, climate scientist Nick Scroxton (Nick Scroxton) said this work helps explain how changes in rainfall affect urban settlement and agriculture. Earth scientist Liviu Giosan called the study an “important step” in understanding the hydroclimate of ancient civilizations. The scientists seemed satisfied with their cross-checks.

I want something an upgrade from the S25 Ultra | Technology News

Samsung finally comes out and reveals its highly anticipated release date Galaxy S26 Ultrascheduled to be released on February 25, 2026. Other S26 models and new wearables are expected to follow. Now that it’s finally out, I think it has multiple aspects that need improvement compared to the previous generation flagship S25 Ultra, including the camera, design, and more. If it delivers on these aspects, it will be a better product than the S25 Ultra. Read on to learn the details.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G will be released on February 25. (Samsung)

A better telephoto camera

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra has two telephoto lenses. Yes, two. But none of them come close to the features of Chinese flagships like the Vivo X300 Pro or Xiaomi Mi 17 Ultra. It’s time for Samsung to bring bigger sensors to the S series, or at least introduce features like telephoto macro capabilities, which will make the overall experience more diverse. However, according to current reports, the S26 Ultra may end up using the same main telephoto camera as the S25 Ultra.

rounded corners

The Galaxy S25 Ultra offers significant improvements over the S24 Ultra in terms of holding comfort. The edges become softer and no longer dig into your palm. If the S26 Ultra further softens the corners, it will bring a more refined experience compared to the S25 Ultra.

This year, reports that Samsung may follow Apple’s lead and switch to aluminum and ditch titanium may be one of the biggest hints of what to expect this year.

Better touch and integration

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra has good haptics, but it’s not great, at least not as good as the Pixel 10 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro. Excellent tactile sensation significantly improves the overall sensory experience. Thanks to subtle haptic feedback integration, clicks feel more tactile, interactions feel softer, and the user interface feels more premium. If the S26 Ultra improves on this aspect, it will offer a better experience compared to the upcoming S25 Ultra.

More batteries

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery and supports 45W fast charging. When you think about it, that’s not very competitive compared to some recent flagships, including the OnePlus 15 and Realme GT 8 Pro. This is largely because Samsung still hasn’t chosen silicon-carbon battery technology. Based on recent industry videos and reports, Samsung appears to be waiting for the technology to mature, but it remains to be seen how Samsung’s loyal users will respond to this approach in the long term.

’20-25 MPs entered Lok Sabha Speaker’s chamber and abused him’: Big allegation against Kiren Rijiju | News India

“20-25名国会议员进入人民院议长的会议室,辱骂他”:基伦·里吉朱(Kiren Rijiju)的重大指控Kieron Rijiju Accused MPs of storming Lok Sabha Speaker on Wednesday About Birlaroom and insulted him.“At least 20 to 25 MPs entered the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chamber and abused him. I was there too. Speaker is a very weak person otherwise drastic action would be taken. Senior Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal were also present and encouraged them to fight,” Rijiju told reporters.Rijiju alleged that the MPs not only misbehaved with the Speaker but also violated parliamentary norms.“They went to the speaker’s chamber to insult him and say bad things. Then the speaker made a ruling but it was not followed and then Rahul Gandhi That he didn’t need anyone’s permission to speak. He will speak as he wishes, without any rules… Members cannot speak on the floor of the House except with the permission of the President. Even the Prime Minister can speak only with the permission of the Chairman. Everyone can speak only with permission,” he added. The new charges come amid an escalating standoff between the government and the parliamentary opposition. Opposition parties on Tuesday filed a notice seeking the removal of Om Birla as Speaker of the Lok Sabha, accusing him of acting in a “blatantly partisan” manner and asking him to recuse himself from presiding over the House until the issue is resolved. The opposition leader also accused Birla of making “false accusations” against MPs after he referred to certain “unexpected actions” in the Lok Sabha and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to go to the House to reply to the motion of thanks for the President’s address. The BJP, however, strongly criticized the opposition’s notice against Birla, saying it was an attempt to undermine the parliamentary machinery. On Tuesday, Rijiju claimed that the situation in the Lok Sabha could become unstable if BJP MPs are allowed to confront Congress MPs on the day when the Prime Minister is scheduled to give his reply to the debate. He posted video footage of the February 4 meeting, showing opposition female lawmakers approaching the finance minister’s table in a heated exchange. Rijiju questioned whether this behavior was justified and accused the opposition parties of disrupting the proceedings of the House of Representatives in an unprecedented manner. The minister claimed that the BJP and NDA MPs were “very angry” over the MP’s behavior but remained restrained. There has been continued disruption in the Assembly since February 2 when Congress president Rahul Gandhi was banned by the chairman from writing an article quoting excerpts from the “unpublished memoirs” of former Army Chief MM Naravane.Chaos came to a head on February 4 when the prime minister was unable to reply to a motion of thanks due to protests from the opposition. In a rare development, the motion of thanks was passed on February 5 without the customary reply from the prime minister. The Speaker read out the motion and it was passed by voice vote amid chants from opposition members.
