'He didn't say anything nice': Salman Ali Agha's war of words with Bangladesh captain Mehidi Hassan Miraz

New Delhi: The debate surrounding the ‘spirit of cricket’ has resurfaced after Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s controversial defeat of Salman Ali Agha in the second ODI between Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. The incident occurred in the 39th innings of the Pakistan team’s match, when the visiting team was in a stable recovery stage. Agha and Mohammad Rizwan put on a 109-run partnership for the fourth wicket after Pakistan lost three early wickets. In the fourth over, bowled by Bangladesh captain Miraz, Rizwan pushed the ball gently to the ground. The ball rolled towards Aga, who came out of the crease at the non-striker’s end after backing up.

When the ball hit the pads of his feet, Aga bent down to pick it up and then handed it back. Miraz, however, quickly caught the ball and removed it while Agha was still outside the crease before pleading for a run-out.The on-field umpire referred the appeal to the third umpire, who ruled in Bangladesh’s favor and confirmed the out. The decision left Aga visibly frustrated as he walked back to the pavilion, with television footage showing the Pakistan batsman expressing his displeasure. The moment also prompted a brief exchange between Aga and Miraz on the field, while Rizwan held discussions with the Bangladesh players.Despite the controversy, Pakistan won the match by 128 runs through the DLS method. After the game, Agha reflected on the dismissal and the circumstances surrounding it.“What he did was legal. I think if he thought it was right, it was right, but from my perspective I would have done it differently. I will pursue sportsmanship. We haven’t done anything like this before and we won’t do it in the future,” Agha said.“Actually, the ball hit my pad and then the bat. So I thought he couldn’t let me run out now because the ball had hit my pad and bat. I just wanted to give it back to him. I wasn’t looking for a run or anything like that, but he had decided to run out,” he added.“It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing. If you asked me what I would have done, I would have done it differently. But that’s all, whatever happens after that, it’s in that moment,” Aga said. When asked about the exchange between the two players during the incident, Agha admitted that neither party used “nice words”.“I don’t remember what I said and I don’t remember what he said. I’m sure I didn’t say a nice thing and I’m sure he didn’t say a nice thing. But it was just in the heat of the moment, so we’re fine,” he said.

How does the government ensure that electricity supply is ahead of demand? We are growing our generation. Earlier, the focus was on increasing thermal capacity. The priority now is renewable energy, especially solar energy. Since solar energy is not available 24/7, we focus on storage solutions. Nuclear energy will also contribute. The current production capacity is about 8GW, with 12GW in preparation. Our long-term goal is to have 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 and encourage states to develop at least one project. Continuous power can come from thermal energy, nuclear energy or natural gas. Natural gas is expensive and therefore not a priority. In 2014-15, the supply-demand gap was approximately 5.5%. This falls to 0.1% by 2024-25, mainly due to technical factors. Developed countries are under pressure to close coal-fired power plants. What policy will India adopt? Our top priority is clean and green energy. The stability of the power grid requires continuous power supply, and thermal power can meet this requirement. All thermal power projects that can be developed by 2032 have been planned. Approximately 20,000MW of capacity is under development. After this, new thermal power plants may not be needed as India has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Existing coal-fired power plants will continue until the end of their lives, but the overall share will gradually decline as renewables expand. How will natural gas shortages affect power generation?I don’t want to comment because this is an evolving situation. Discoms reported profits of around Rs 2,700 crore. However, the industry still suffers from huge debts and accumulated losses. How will this be resolved?Earlier, losses increased as tariffs were not aligned with costs. Governments often announce free or subsidized electricity, so the cost of supply is higher than the charges. In some cases the gap reaches Re 1 per unit. Gradually, states began to address the problem. AT&C’s losses have dropped to about 16% from 23-24% 10 years ago. Illegal connections were removed and the billing system was improved. Despite these improvements, cumulative losses were still around Rs 6.7 billion. Earlier, UDAY planned to transfer telecom debt to state governments. Similar approaches are being considered alongside reforms such as partial privatization. Which states are taking steps toward privatization?Gujarat has already started moving in this direction, Haryana is exploring the option and Uttar Pradesh is considering further private participation. Haryana has come up with a model where a separate company will take care of agricultural power connections. Agricultural feeders will be separated and power accounting will become clearer. Farmer organizations protested against privatization in some places. What message does the center want to send to them to address their concerns?Farmers primarily need reliable electricity for irrigation. Whether the supply comes from a government company or a private company, there will be no impact on operations. Subsidies will continue. There is talk of opening two disco shops in the same area so that consumers can benefit from competition. Considering the idea of multiple vendors?Yes, under review. The quality of the power cannot be distinguished because once the power enters the network, it becomes mixed. The system functions somewhat like the telecommunications sector, with consumers choosing their service providers. The physical network will remain unchanged. Wires and gauges will not change. Only the suppliers providing power behind the network will change, and a digital system will track how much power each supplier provides. Consumers will be able to choose suppliers based primarily on tariffs. The concept is still in its early stages and requires legal and policy approval before implementation. When will all homes be equipped with smart meters? n There was initial resistance, especially in rural areas, but people are starting to understand the benefits. With prepaid smart meters, companies can also receive payments in advance. If these measures are widely adopted, nearly Rs 100 crore could come into the system as an advance, thereby improving liquidity in the power sector and reducing the need for loans. Some states already offer incentives for prepaid meters. Will new hydropower projects emerge in Kashmir after Indus Waters Treaty suspension? Some plants are already operational and desilting work is underway to restore reservoir capacity. Three to four projects that were on hold have also been launched. Other projects are being planned and site selection is underway. There are also proposals to divert the water towards Punjab and further towards Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi through canals or tunnels. There are two or three possible routes; we have to see which one can be built faster and be financially viable. A scheme proposed through Jammu City may not be feasible. The feasibility of an alternative route around the city is being examined.

Slamming the act, Kaif said: “It was not done at all. Taking a wicket at all costs does not justify such an out. This is what the captain did too. Youngsters, remember, even if the World Cup final is coming, don’t do what the Bangladesh captain did. Sports without fair play is not sports.”The incident occurred in Pakistan’s 39th over when the visitors were rebuilding after losing three early wickets. Agha and Mohammad Rizwan combined for 109 for the fourth wicket to stabilize the innings. On the fourth ball bowled by Miraz, Rizwan gently pushed the ball down. The ball rolls towards Aga, who has retreated and is standing outside the crease at the non-forward end. When the ball hit the pads of his feet, Aga instinctively bent down, picked up the ball and tried to hand it back to him. Miraz, however, quickly grabbed the ball and bowled it with Agha still outside the crease before pleading for a run-out.Following an appeal, the on-field umpire referred the decision to the third umpire and replays confirmed the decision in favor of Bangladesh. The decision left Aga visibly frustrated as he walked back to the pavilion, with television footage showing the Pakistan batsman expressing his displeasure after receiving the call. The incident also sparked a brief exchange between players from both teams on the field. Rizwan was seen having discussions with Bangladesh players while Lithon Das defended Miraz’s call. The rare exit quickly became the biggest talking point of the game, with fans online divided. While many supported Aga and criticized the spirit of the dismissal, others felt that the Pakistan batsman should have ensured that he returned to his position.Meanwhile, Pakistan were bowled out for 274 in 47.3 overs, with Maaz Sadaqat top-scoring with 75. Gyanesh Kumar under criticism: Opposition ousts Chief Election Commissioner after SIR controversy

.

NEW DELHI: The united opposition on Friday moved Parliament to remove Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar from office, a crucial step as the anti-BJP camp’s protests against the National Election Commission and elections have taken to extreme extremes and will further widen their already wide rift with the National Development Alliance. The removal notice comes ahead of the Election Commission announcing the schedule for assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry, where key members of the Indian bloc are contesting bjpalso against each other.

Gyanesh Kumar under criticism: Opposition ousts Chief Election Commissioner after SIR controversy

Opposition members submitted recall notices to both houses of parliament, with 130 members of the House of Commons and 63 members of the House of Federation signing the petition. The notifications include not just the India Bloc parties but also some independent MPs and the AAP, which have been fighting the EC and raising serious allegations over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Delhi’s electoral rolls. AAP quit the group after the 2024 LS polls.Sources in the India Group said the petition filed seven charges against Kumar, mainly alleging “partisan and discriminatory conduct while in office”, “deliberate obstruction of investigations into electoral fraud”, “massive disenfranchisement of voters” and “misconduct”. They said the opposition has also raised issues regarding the SIR for the 2025 Bihar polls and upcoming elections in states like West Bengal and the CEC’s favoritism towards political parties. The opposition has been accusing the Election Commission of trying to help the BJP through the SIR. CEC’s removal notice is TMC West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee first raised the demand during the budget session in February. The move comes after Mamata led days of militant protests in Kolkata. The procedure for removing the CEC is similar to that for Supreme Court judges – a sitting judge can only be removed “on proven misconduct or incapacity”. As per the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, once the motion to remove a judge is approved by the LS or RS, the Speaker or the Chairman will constitute a three-member panel to inquire into the grounds. Once the report is submitted, it will be tabled in the House and subsequently discussed. The motion must be passed by a majority of both chambers of Congress and a two-thirds majority of those present and voting. Given the NDA’s majority in LS and RS, this makes the opposition move unlikely to succeed. There is some kind of quid pro quo that ensures early submission of notices in LS and RS. The TMC did not sign the ouster notice against Speaker Om Birla that was supported by other opposition parties but supported the notice when it was raised on LS this week after there was a consensus within the India Group to co-sponsor the notice against the CEC.
