'He didn't say anything nice': Salman Ali Agha's war of words with Bangladesh captain Mehidi Hassan Miraz

New Delhi: The debate surrounding the ‘spirit of cricket’ has resurfaced after Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s controversial defeat of Salman Ali Agha in the second ODI between Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. The incident occurred in the 39th innings of the Pakistan team’s match, when the visiting team was in a stable recovery stage. Agha and Mohammad Rizwan put on a 109-run partnership for the fourth wicket after Pakistan lost three early wickets. In the fourth over, bowled by Bangladesh captain Miraz, Rizwan pushed the ball gently to the ground. The ball rolled towards Aga, who came out of the crease at the non-striker’s end after backing up.

When the ball hit the pads of his feet, Aga bent down to pick it up and then handed it back. Miraz, however, quickly caught the ball and removed it while Agha was still outside the crease before pleading for a run-out.The on-field umpire referred the appeal to the third umpire, who ruled in Bangladesh’s favor and confirmed the out. The decision left Aga visibly frustrated as he walked back to the pavilion, with television footage showing the Pakistan batsman expressing his displeasure. The moment also prompted a brief exchange between Aga and Miraz on the field, while Rizwan held discussions with the Bangladesh players.Despite the controversy, Pakistan won the match by 128 runs through the DLS method. After the game, Agha reflected on the dismissal and the circumstances surrounding it.“What he did was legal. I think if he thought it was right, it was right, but from my perspective I would have done it differently. I will pursue sportsmanship. We haven’t done anything like this before and we won’t do it in the future,” Agha said.“Actually, the ball hit my pad and then the bat. So I thought he couldn’t let me run out now because the ball had hit my pad and bat. I just wanted to give it back to him. I wasn’t looking for a run or anything like that, but he had decided to run out,” he added.“It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing. If you asked me what I would have done, I would have done it differently. But that’s all, whatever happens after that, it’s in that moment,” Aga said. When asked about the exchange between the two players during the incident, Agha admitted that neither party used “nice words”.“I don’t remember what I said and I don’t remember what he said. I’m sure I didn’t say a nice thing and I’m sure he didn’t say a nice thing. But it was just in the heat of the moment, so we’re fine,” he said.
