Nolan Wells Update: District Attorney explains why evidence to be kept secret, ‘if we sacrifice…’

“Despite the divisive discussions surrounding Nolan’s death, I know we all want the same thing: to understand what happened to Nolan. That is our shared goal, and we must also work together to protect the integrity of the way the truth is discovered,” McIlrath said, according to the Hattiesburg American. “If we sacrifice the integrity of our process to solve today’s problems, we risk undermining confidence in tomorrow’s answers.”

McIlrath meets with Will’s parents and legal team Ben CrumpWednesday, July 15, at the invitation of the family. During the meeting, the district attorney shared information about victim services resources and explained that the case would be presented to a grand jury.
This is standard for many deaths in Jackson County and does not indicate possible criminal conduct.
“With the exception of natural causes and non-criminal crashes, all deaths in the county are presented to the grand jury,” McIlrath said. “A lot of people don’t know this. We have handled death investigations this way throughout my entire career. Nolan’s case was handled with the same manner, the same care and the same commitment to the truth that we handle all death investigations.”
McIlrath further said: “I understand the public is eager to know what happened to Nolan, but we are not taking our time for the sake of time. We are taking the time to complete the work required to do this investigation.”
