Mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa of Kathmandu, Nepal, made history on Sunday when she climbed Mount Everest for the 32nd time, breaking her own world record for the most Everest summits.
The 56-year-old veteran climber, popularly known as the “Everest Man”, climbed the 8,848.86-meter-high mountain at 10:12 a.m., according to the local tourism bureau.
He is said to be leading an expedition operated by 14 Peaks Expedition.
According to the “Kathmandu Post” report, the department’s field office at Everest Base Camp confirmed the successful summit.
Kami Rita was born in Thame Village, Solukhumbu District, Kosi Province in January 1970. She began her professional mountaineering career in 1992 and climbed Mount Everest for the first time in 1994.
The Ministry of Tourism congratulated Sherpa, saying his achievement reflected a significant contribution to Nepal’s mountaineering industry and its international image.
Kami Rita has climbed Sagarmatha twice, in 2023 and 2024, which is a mountain well known to Nepalese. He climbed the peak for the 31st time on May 27, 2025.
Between 1994 and 2025, Kamilita also climbed K2 and Lhotse once, Manaslu three times, and Cho Oyu eight times, all at altitudes above 8,000 meters.
On a related note, Lhakpa Sherpa, also known as the “Queen of Mountains” and the first Nepali woman to scale Mount Everest, successfully climbed Mount Everest for the 11th time on Sunday, breaking her own world record.
The Ministry of Tourism said she reached the summit at 9:30 am.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah congratulated them and said, “Only unwavering courage, strict self-discipline and honest dedication can achieve such a historic success.”

The Prime Minister praised the Sherpa community’s contribution to Nepal’s mountaineering history as “extraordinary and unparalleled”.
He further said that the Sherpas are the “real unsung heroes of the Himalayas” and “without their courage, knowledge and labor, the glory of the Himalayas would not be complete. I believe that this crowning achievement of theirs will make Nepal’s mountain tourism industry more credible, prestigious and attractive, while further highlighting Nepal’s position on the global stage.”
Carmelita’s colleagues also congratulated him on his achievement. Ang Tshering Sherpa, former president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, said: “Kami Rita is not only a strong climber, but also has good technical skills in the field of mountaineering.”
Aung Clin, former president of the Asian Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, said that without a strong and dedicated climber, it would not have been possible to climb Mount Everest 32 times.
Kami Rita (Kami Rita), Appa (Appa) and Ang Rita (Ang Rita) all belong to Solukhumbu District, which has produced many strong summit climbers.
Ang Rita set a world record by climbing Everest 10 times without supplemental oxygen, while Appa climbed the world’s highest peak 21 times.
In 2024, Kami Rita and Padwa Sherpa both reached the summit 29 times. However, after Padwa developed some health problems, he did not attempt the climb for three years, giving Kami Rita the chance to set another world record.
Mount Everest is located northeast of Kathmandu, on the border of Nepal and Tibet, and can be climbed from both the north and south sides.
On May 29, 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay climbed the peak for the first time.
Official figures show that more than 7,500 climbers have successfully summited Mount Everest, while more than 300 have died in dangerous terrain while climbing or descending.
