The index, released on March 30, ranked Pakistan at the top of the list of countries most affected by terrorism, marking the first time the country ranked first.
“While Asim Munir’s army is busy projecting power and dominating the global spotlight — mediating between the United States and Iran, sending fighter jets and troops to Riyadh — it is suffering a ‘shocking defeat’ at home in the face of the militant groups it once nurtured,” said a report in Eurasia Times, referring to Pakistan’s powerful army chief and current field marshal.
According to reports, since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict in late February, terrorist attacks in Pakistan have not only continued, but have also intensified in many areas, especially areas bordering Afghanistan.
The restive provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan accounted for an alarming 74% of these attacks and 67% of the fatalities, the report said. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) have “wreaked havoc” on the Pakistani military and have in fact become bolder, “more sophisticated and more deadly”.
The report noted that earlier this year, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) launched one of the most coordinated attacks in years, targeting at least nine districts in Balochistan province, including the capital Quetta and the port city of Gwadar. The attacks reportedly targeted police stations, banks, markets and security installations, killing dozens of civilians and security personnel.
It also referred to a major suicide bombing outside a Shiite mosque in Islamabad that killed at least 31 worshipers. The attack was one of the deadliest to hit the capital in recent years and is widely believed to have been carried out by Islamic State Khorasan.
In a rare incident, Baloch rebels also ambushed a coast guard patrol near Gwadar, killing three officials. This is the first recorded BLA attack on a Pakistani maritime vessel.
Between May 7 and 15, five attacks occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
“While Field Marshal Asim Munir’s forces project power abroad, whether in Riyadh or mediating negotiations in Islamabad, their forces continue to struggle to secure their own barracks and border areas,” the report said.
