Cryptocurrency tracking firm TRM Labs said the term “wrench attack” describes a scenario where force or intimidation is used to force a victim to give up access to their cryptocurrency assets, Newsweek reported.
The name of these attacks comes from a theoretical situation where an attacker uses a wrench to force an individual to reveal their encryption keys.
Such attacks have proliferated around the world in recent years.
Crypto security company CertiK reported that there were 34 confirmed incidents worldwide in the first four months of 2026, a 41% increase compared to the same period last year.

One major incident involved David Balland, co-founder of French crypto wallet company Ledger, and his wife, who were kidnapped from their residence. Fortunately, the two were eventually rescued successfully and many suspects were also captured.
TRM Labs said there are several factors contributing to the increase in such attacks, one of which is criminals’ belief that they can successfully commit cryptocurrency theft due to the difficulty of tracking transactions.
