Astronomers have long viewed the early universe as a place where galaxies were still finding their footing, small systems rapidly formed stars, and the larger cosmic structures familiar today had yet to form. Galaxy clusters, the vast cities of the universe, are thought to have gained influence much later. However, new observations from the distant universe are starting to complicate the picture. Huge protogalaxy clusters that emerged just 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang now show that their location mattered at a surprisingly early stage. Even so, galaxies growing in crowded regions appear to evolve differently from galaxies living in quieter regions of space, suggesting that environment guided the development of the universe almost from the beginning.
The structure at the center of the study is known as the Locktack Protocluster, a massive concentration of galaxies discovered when the universe was still in its infancy. It was first discovered by the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, whose wide-field imaging system allows astronomers to scan large areas of distant sky for signs of star cluster galaxy growth.According to UNI, a team led by Manipuri astrophysicist Ronaldo Laishram has discovered a massive young galaxy structure dating back nearly 12.6 billion years ago, providing new insights into how galaxies formed and evolved in the early universe. At that time in the history of the universe, galaxies were still actively forming stars. Many stars emit intense Lyman alpha radiation, a specific wavelength produced when energetic young stars excite the hydrogen gas around them. By isolating this signal, astronomers are able to map where galaxies gather. The resulting image shows an unusual organization for such an early era: several dense areas connected into a larger structure. The team named it after Loktak Lake in Manipur, which has floating land masses roughly similar to the associated concentrations seen in the survey data.
Modern galaxy clusters are among the largest gravitational structures in existence. Some galaxies contain thousands of galaxies bound together by dark matter and large amounts of hot gas. Their galaxies often appear older and less active than isolated systems elsewhere in the universe. Astronomers have known for decades that galaxies in these dense environments behave differently. Star formation tends to slow down. The shape becomes more rounded. Interactions between nearby galaxies are becoming more common. The uncertainty lies in timing. No one knows exactly when environmental influences began to leave their mark on galaxy evolution. Protoclusters provide a way to look back at the transitional period before the mature cluster was fully assembled. The Loktak system is located at a particularly useful distance because its light comes from about 12.6 billion years ago. Observing it is actually observing an era when large-scale cosmic structures were still under construction.
After Subaru’s discovery, infrared instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope examined the area. Webb allows astronomers to compare galaxies within protoclusters to galaxies in more average environments that existed at the same moment in cosmic time. At first glance, these galaxies don’t seem to be particularly different. In the ultraviolet observations, which highlighted regions where new stars are actively forming, the two groups of stars are quite similar in size. Their bright star-forming cores appear to be growing at a considerable rate. The difference appears in optical wavelengths that track older star populations. Galaxies embedded in dense protocluster environments generally appear much larger than galaxies elsewhere. On average, their structures were extended approximately 1.4 times.
