CNN’s Aby Phillip says McConnell ‘really’ froze on camera

During a segment on CNN’s Newsnight on Tuesday, Philip responded to a viewer’s query about whether there are congressional regulations related to the health of lawmakers and their ability to carry out their duties.

“I think what this all shows us is that no, no, that actually doesn’t exist,” Philip said. “Unfortunately, you can do whatever you want.”

McConnell has endured several public health incidents, including multiple moments where he froze in front of reporters and a fall in a Washington hotel that resulted in him being treated for a concussion. After the incidents, a Republican colleague said it “certainly should be a rule of the House” for elected officials to disclose their medical history.

On Tuesday’s show, Philippe mentioned that McConnell “literally” froze in front of the cameras, while also raising questions about the Republican strategy regarding his future. “Look, you know, senior years are coming for all of us, right? Let’s not pretend that 84 is not a senior age. At some point, he’s going to have to make a decision about whether he’s capable of doing his job, and his constituents should know that.”

Ana Navarro names Mitch McConnell’s team

Meanwhile, The View’s Ana Navarro, who was on the NewsNight panel, said McConnell’s staffers plan to remain employed for the next “six months.”

“I do think the key issue here is transparency. I think if you’re in public service, if you’re in elected office, you owe it to your constituents and constituents to provide transparency and you need to explain if you’re going to be absent from a job that involves voting for such an extended period of time,” she said.

Phillip also highlighted the ambiguity of McConnell’s team. “Why can’t they just say ‘He has this. He’s getting better. He’s getting better’?” she asked. “Whatever it is, if that’s the case, they shouldn’t just say, ‘This is what happened to him. He’s getting better. We hope he’s discharged.'”
