Ministry of Sports reiterates India-Pakistan sports relations policy: bilateral and transnational sports relations will not be exempted
New Delhi: The Sports Ministry maintains its policy on sports relations with Pakistan, which remains a blanket ban on bilateral relations. Transnational events such as the ICC events, the Olympics, and the Asian Games will continue to enjoy exemptions.“As far as bilateral sports events between each other’s countries are concerned, Indian teams will not participate in Pakistan’s matches. We will also not allow Pakistani teams to play in India,” an office memorandum issued by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on May 5 said.
“For international and multilateral events, whether in India or abroad, we are guided by the practices of international sports bodies and the interests of our own athletes. It is also important to take into account the Indian context.To become a reliable venue for hosting international sporting events,” it continued.There are no changes to the policy issued on August 21 last year.As Ahmedabad will host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and has ambitions to host the Asian Games and Olympic Games, the document also spells out the intention to simplify the visa process for relevant individuals.“In order to position India as a preferred destination for hosting international sports events, visa procedures should be simplified for athletes, team officials, technical staff and officials of international sports governing bodies.”“Officials of international sports governing bodies should be granted priority multiple-entry visas for a maximum period of five years during their tenure. This will facilitate their smooth entry and movement within the country in compliance with international norms,” the memorandum said.The policy comes after last year’s uproar over India’s participation in the Men’s Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates, which also featured Pakistan.
