Telling someone they “look good” is considered a compliment, and when said to an older person, it’s a pleasant gesture. King Charles, 77, doesn’t pretend age is just a number, however. The Queen’s reaction to being told he “looked good” cut short the pleasantries. While attending the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Sandringham Flower Show on July 22, a well-wisher told him: “I’m your age and you look great!” The monarch’s reaction was quite cheeky. “Things get more difficult, don’t they?” Hello! the report said. These words, spoken with perfect timing and a familiar smile, elicited laughter from people who immediately recognized it as truth rather than modesty. He was simply stating a fact that only people over 70 know.

King Charles’s comment was not one of those well-written ones. It works because it has a level of honesty rarely seen in royal statements. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time he’s talked about aging like this. He has made similar observations in past years. In September 2025, during a visit to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, he poked fun at aging. “As I’ve discovered, it’s a terrible thing. When you get over 70, those things don’t work that well anymore,” he said. Last year, when asked about skiing, he admitted those days were “gone.” Likewise, in October 2024, when asked about his favorite sport, he shrugged and said he couldn’t do it much anymore because injuries were piling up. “I can’t do much now, there are just too many injuries,” King Charles said, according to Hello!

While most people like to downplay the highs and lows of aging, calling it just a number, King Charles is realistic. He doesn’t mind talking about the gap between what he wants to do and what his knees, back and energy level allow.

The timing of these jokes is also important. King Charles first announced in early 2024 that he had cancer. On February 5, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles had been diagnosed with a form of cancer discovered during treatment. The palace said the king “has begun a regular treatment program” during which he will “postpone public-facing duties.”“The King thanks his medical team for their swift intervention, thanks to his recent hospital surgery. He remains fully positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duties as soon as possible,” the statement said. The statement also explained that the monarch “chose to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope that this can help educate the public about all those affected by cancer around the world.” In December 2025, the palace announced that his treatment would be reduced after he responded well to care. “Thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and following ‘doctor’s orders,’ my own cancer treatment schedule will be reduced in the New Year,” King said. The King added: “This milestone is both a personal blessing and testament to the remarkable progress that has been made in cancer treatment in recent years, and I hope it will provide encouragement to the 50 per cent of us who will be diagnosed with this disease at some point in our lives.”Buckingham Palace later issued a statement saying King Charles “is responding extremely well to treatment and his doctors have advised that ongoing measures will now move into a precautionary phase. The situation will be continuously monitored and reviewed to protect and prioritize his ongoing recovery.”Meanwhile, the Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show marked the first official event of its kind at Sandringham Estate, with King Charles and Queen Camilla also in attendance, serving the crowds as they would at any public event. During the same walk, another well-wisher told him he bore a striking resemblance to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth. “You look a lot like your mom,” the well-wisher said. The king stopped to chat, apparently pleased with the comparison. He seemed to “take the comment well and stopped to chat briefly” Hello! the report said.
