Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry are facing backlash after they were caught drinking from plastic cups during an outing at the Coachella music festival, despite the former Canadian prime minister’s push to limit single-use plastics in the past. The couple, who have been romantically involved since mid-2025, attended the first weekend of the California music festival, where Perry shared photos and videos on Instagram of their time together in the crowd.Photos posted by Perry show the couple holding hands as they walk through the festival grounds, sitting together and eating snacks between performances. In several clips, the pair can be seen holding red plastic cups while watching the show, one of which was filmed during Justin Bieber’s headlining show. The images went viral on X, with some users accusing Trudeau of hypocrisy. While still in office, the Trudeau government announced a ban on certain single-use plastics in June 2019. The federal regulations take effect in December 2022 and target items including shopping bags, cutlery, stir sticks and some food service utensils. Sales restrictions were later expanded in December 2023. The policy was introduced to reduce plastic pollution and protect wildlife and oceans. After the Coachella image was posted, users on X questioned why Trudeau was drinking from a plastic cup in public, linked to the high-profile environmental agenda. One user wrote: “This asshole is drinking out of a plastic cup after they were banned across the country.”However, others defended the former prime minister, arguing he had no control over the food served at the festival. One user said: “What is he supposed to do in this situation? Refuse to drink? They won’t have any other mechanism.”Additionally, it’s worth noting that not all plastic cups are banned under Canadian regulations. The restrictions focus on specific types of harmful single-use plastics, including certain food service supplies made from materials like expanded polystyrene foam and PVC, while other plastic products remain legal.
