He is accused of slitting the throat of his 20-year-old wife, Karla Rangel, during a domestic dispute in Dallas, killing her.According to officials, the couple had been married for less than a month when the incident occurred. When police arrived at the scene, Mendez-Marin was found to have blood on his clothing and to be in possession of a blood-stained knife.Body camera footage cited in the arrest affidavit shows him telling police in Spanish, “I didn’t do anything bad” and “I had an obligation to do this.”Following the arrest, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it filed a detainer with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), asking local authorities not to release the suspect. Mendez-Marin is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.Acting Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Lauren Biss issued a statement on the case. “This depraved animal murdered his wife by brutally slitting her throat with a knife just a month after their wedding,” she said. “This illegal immigrant should never have been allowed into our country to commit this heinous murder.”She added: “ICE is asking Dallas authorities not to release this cold-blooded killer onto the streets. Thankfully, Dallas politicians are working with ICE so together we can ensure this murderer never goes unpunished in an American community.”
