New Delhi: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is likely to travel to Nepal next month in what will be the first high-level bilateral visit since the new government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah took office. Although Nepali media reports said the visit could take place on May 11-12, official sources said the dates were still being worked out. Both sides believe that this visit is an opportunity to further expand cooperation in multiple fields. According to sources, the visit was proposed during a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Hishir Khanal on the sidelines of the Indian Ocean Conference in Mauritius earlier this month. This is the first high-level contact between the two countries since the Shah took office. Misri is also expected to formally extend a visit invitation to Shah on behalf of Modi. However, as diplomatic sources said, before any ministerial visit can take place, the two sides need to first discuss the new government’s focus and priorities. Notably, Nepal’s new government hosted senior officials from the United States and China.
