Even the Mahabharata will pale: Supreme Court spat over Kapoor

NEW DELHI: Days after the SC appointed former CJI DY Chandrachud as mediator for a fresh plea in the property dispute between late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur and his wife Priya Kapur, the Supreme Court said even the Mahabharat will pale in comparison to the family legal battle. The matter came up before a bench headed by Justice JB Pardiwala and the court agreed to hear the plea on May 14. Rani Kapur filed a fresh petition claiming that the SC’s May 7 order was circumvented. After both parties expressed willingness to mediate, the Supreme Court on May 7 appointed the former CJI as mediator and advised them to keep the dispute within the family and not make public statements.“We will await the mediator’s preliminary report before taking the matter further,” the judge said, posting the matter in August. On April 27, the court had sought response from Priya Kapur and others in a suit filed by Rani Kapur seeking an order declaring the family trust “invalid”. She claimed the trust was established in October 2017 and was the product of “forged, fabricated and fraudulent” documents.Legal proceedings regarding the estate and control of assets are pending in the Delhi High Court and a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to maintain the status quo of the trust properties.
