The name Darrius Jackobe Smith has been widely shared online after the deadly shooting near an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, on August 1. Many social media posts claim he was the gunman.
However, officials have not identified the suspect by that name. Twin Falls Police Department have instead warned people against sharing unverified information while they continue their investigation.
The confusion comes from an older Twin Falls case from 2022 that has no connection to the latest shooting. Here is what is actually known, why Smith’s name is being mentioned, and what police have officially said so far.
Why is Darrius Jackobe Smith’s name being linked to the Twin Falls shooting?
The claim started after people found old police reports and news stories from 2022 that mentioned Darrius Jackobe Smith. Those reports were then wrongly shared as if they were connected to the August 2026 shooting.
Smith was a 19-year-old from Boise, Idaho, who was found dead on April 8, 2022. Before his death, police had linked him to an investigation into a shooting at Harmon Park in Twin Falls that happened two days earlier. A 17-year-old was injured in that incident and survived.
Although investigators looked into possible connections between the Harmon Park shooting and Smith’s death, that case is separate from the recent In-N-Out shooting. There is no evidence linking Smith to the August 2026 attack.
What have officials said about the Twin Falls shooting?
The shooting happened near an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls on August 1, leaving three people dead and seven others injured. One of those killed was an In-N-Out employee.
In a statement shared on social media, In-N-Out owner Lynsi Snyder wrote, “My heart is broken, my chest is heavy, my eyes burn from the tears I’ve shed. We lost one of our beautiful Associates tonight. In-N-Out will be mourning with the families and praying for them as they tread through a very painful season.”
Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said investigators were still working to identify the shooter and understand the motive. Officials have not released the names of the victims because families were still being notified, city spokesperson Josh Palmer said.
The FBI has also asked anyone with photos or videos from the scene to share them with investigators as the investigation continues.

The viral posts are mixing two completely different cases.
Darrius Jackobe Smith died in 2022, years before the August 2026 shooting. His name appeared in reports related to the earlier Harmon Park investigation, which is why some old articles resurfaced after the latest tragedy.
As of now, no law enforcement agency has identified Smith as the suspect in the In-N-Out shooting. Officials continue to investigate the case and have asked the public to rely only on information released by Twin Falls Police and other verified authorities until the investigation is complete.
