“Nine workers were killed and 15 others were injured,” Prafull Thakur, Sakti superintendent of police, said, adding that the explosion took place in the afternoon.
SP further revealed that after the explosion, local government and police teams rushed to the scene and immediately launched rescue operations to find survivors.
According to police, three victims died at the scene and the others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The injured workers were also taken to hospitals in neighboring Raigarh district for treatment.
Raigarh SDM Mahesh Sharma said investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. “A heartbreaking incident occurred at Vedanta Power Plant today where some workers were injured and their treatment is ongoing. Our investigation is on,” he said.
