KOLKATA/CHENNAI: Bengal recorded a historic 93.2 per cent turnout in the first phase of assembly elections, while Tamil Nadu’s final provisional figures stabilized at 85.1 per cent after minor revisions, Election Commission data showed on Saturday.On April 23, more than 3.36 crore voters out of 3.6 billion voters cast their votes in Bengal’s 16 constituencies. Cooch Behar leads with 96.2%, followed by South Dinajpur with 95.4%. Malda (94.8%), Jalpaiguri (94.7%), Birbhum (94.5%) and North Dinajpur (94.2%) also crossed the 94% mark. Only Kalimpong (83%) and Darjeeling (88.9%) remained below 90%.
The turnout in Tamil Nadu was revised down by 0.05 percentage points with 28,672 voters and a total vote count of Rs 48.7 crore. Numbers are still provisional. The electoral commission ruled out a re-poll after reviewing 75,064 polling stations. Karur district topped the list with 92.6% of votes, while Karur constituency led with 93.4% of votes. Veerapandi of Salem followed with 93.4% approval rating.
