'Bad move': Cyprus chess president hits back at Koneru Hampi after candidate withdraws

New Delhi: India’s top grandmaster (GM) Koneru Humpy has withdrawn from the 2026 Women’s Candidates Championship in Cyprus, saying she felt it was not safe to participate in the event. Her decision sparked criticism, particularly from the Cyprus Chess Federation.Humpy wrote onThe match, which begins on March 28, is a major event and the only path to the Women’s World Championship. Humpy qualified for the 2025 Women’s World Cup after finishing second. However, concerns related to regional tensions reportedly influenced her choice.

The organizers reacted strongly

Her withdrawal was not recognized by Cyprus Chess Federation president Creton Tonaritis, who publicly criticized her remarks. He referred the matter toHe strongly refuted her claims, adding, “The 2026 Women’s Candidates Championship is one of the largest and most important chess events in the world. This is simply wrong. Spreading unfounded concerns harms the sport and shows a lack of respect for the organizers and competing players. At the highest levels of chess, decisions are based on calculation and facts, not fear or misinformation. This is a bad move.”“FIDE has confirmed that with Hampi’s elimination, Ukrainian player Anna Muzychuk will take her place. If her reasons are not accepted, there may also be consequences, including possible fines under FIDE rules. Despite her absence, India will be represented in the women’s tournament through R Vaishali and Divya Deshmukh. In the open category, R Praggnanandhaa will be the sole flag-bearer for Team India.
