What Postpartum Psychosis Survivors Share
This woman shared her experience after the birth of her child Joy.
“I was wide awake, well rested, holding my baby, staring at him, and I heard a distinctly male voice. I would call Chris and keep asking him ‘Are you home now?’. ‘No, honey. I’m in the office. What’s wrong?’,” the woman shared.
“The voices weren’t what you might imagine. It wasn’t like some kind of demonic possession or creepy voice. It was a very clear human voice speaking that would make me look for another person in my home. I kept ignoring them, but then the hallucinations would start. I would hear these voices and then see a dark shadow pass through my peripheral vision that was a very distinct adult body. Again, I was holding my baby and after a few months I felt happy and healthy and rested,” she added.
“‘Hello???’ ‘Hi. What’s going on?’ the man’s friendly voice replied as the blurry figure slipped over my shoulder into the restaurant. I put Joey on the swing and started looking for the sound,” the woman further detailed.
“This happened every week. Then it started happening every day. I kept seeing people walking through my home. Every time I tried to look at them, they completely disappeared, like they were never there. Every day I heard voices and sometimes they would respond to my questions or shouts. My whole reality was crumbling,” she continued in the heartbreaking post.
