According to Reuters citing Chinese authorities, Typhoon Nol, the 12th typhoon to hit China this year and the third typhoon to land this month, hit Huidong County, Guangdong Province at around 3:50 a.m. local time on Sunday.Before landfall, China’s National Meteorological Observatory issued a typhoon red warning – the highest level in a four-level typhoon system – while Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan and Guangxi activated emergency measures.Authorities warned that the storm would bring heavy rainfall to much of southern China over the next two days, increasing the risk of flash floods, landslides and river flooding.The China Meteorological Administration predicted unusually heavy rainfall in parts of Fujian and urged local governments to monitor vulnerable areas such as valleys, bridges and construction sites, Reuters reported.As of Sunday, more than 801,000 people had been moved to safer areas in Guangdong province, the Associated Press reported. In response to the increased risk of flash floods, China’s Ministry of Water Resources has also upgraded its emergency response to flood control.The Central Recovery Plan will be used to restore damaged infrastructure, including roads, schools, hospitals and water facilities.

The typhoon also hit neighboring Hong Kong with strong winds before moving inland.Ahead of the storm, authorities canceled more than 410 flights and 150 high-speed rail services, while opening 28 temporary shelters for residents.Airport operations gradually resumed Sunday afternoon after being largely suspended for more than 12 hours.Some 350 flights were canceled on Sunday alone, leaving nearly 2,000 passengers stranded over the weekend. At least 21 people were injured in Hong Kong during the typhoon, according to the local government.Several dramatic videos from the storm quickly went viral on social media.A widely circulated video shows scaffolding collapsing on the side of a high-rise building in Hong Kong as strong winds hit the city.Police said no injuries were reported in the incident.The crib eventually tipped over and the child inside crawled back unharmed.Another video recorded in Guangdong captured the horrific moment when strong winds blew open a door to a home and sent a cot rolling across the room.Other videos circulating online showed the hurricane uprooting trees and throwing debris onto city streets as the storm swept through China’s southern provinces, leaving pedestrians barely able to stand upright.

Typhoon weakens but rain threat remains

Although Noor’s strength has weakened since it moved inland, authorities warn its impact is far from over.The Hong Kong Observatory said the storm was gradually weakening, prompting officials to lower Hong Kong’s typhoon warning signal from No. 8 to No. 3 on Sunday afternoon.However, the system is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to inland provinces such as Jiangxi and Hunan until Tuesday.“Noor” is the strongest typhoon to land in China so far this year. Before reaching China, the storm also affected the Philippines, killing at least three people and causing widespread flooding that displaced many residents.It also brought heavy rain to parts of Taiwan but did not make landfall.
