US media reports on CJP protests and Dharmendra Pradhan resignation

American media, including CNN and The Washington Post reported on the protests in India and Pradhan’s resignation. As the trend of Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation gains traction online, here are some of the eye-catching headlines from the US media.

Dharmendra Pradhan resigns: Here’s what’s happening in New Delhi

In New Delhi, large numbers of students and activists took to the streets to celebrate after the news was announced, with many proudly waving Indian flags.

The controversy has escalated since May, when online leaks affected the NEET undergraduate exam, India’s highly competitive entrance exam for medical schools.

The CJP, which takes its name from India’s chief justice Surya Kant’s comments comparing unemployed youth to “cockroaches”, has emerged as the most significant challenge faced by Modi during his 12 years in power.

In addition to the resignation of the minister, protesters are demanding compensation for the families of students who committed suicide after their exam papers were leaked, and accountability for police crackdowns on demonstrations.

“The family of the child who committed suicide should receive compensation of 10 million rupees ($100,000),” the CJP said in a release on Saturday. “Second, these police thugs who acted on the 20th. Action must be taken against the police for this.”

“Remember, don’t mess with cockroaches,” it added.

Sonam Wangchuck hails ‘victory of peace’

Meanwhile, activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a 26-day hunger strike, reacted to Pradhan’s resignation, calling it a “triumph of peace, patience and perseverance”.
