Dozens of incoming Howard University students say they unexpectedly lost their spots in the freshman class just weeks before the start of the fall semester. Students received emails from the university saying they had been deregistered because they missed the July 10 payment deadline.

Howard University said it has repeatedly informed students and families of payment deadlines between March and July and is currently reviewing cases involving pending scholarships and financial aid.

Several incoming freshmen received emails from Howard University saying they lost their spots in the freshman class because they missed the July 10 payment deadline.
One of them, Isabella Williams, said she had packed up her truck and was preparing to leave Alabama for washingtonD.C., when she received the email. “For us to be suddenly dropped from most of our dream schools is heartbreaking. It’s confusing,” Williams said.
She said the scholarship is expected to cover the remainder of her tuition, and she has sent documents to the university showing the money will arrive in August. “I spent many hours and even late nights applying for scholarships to make sure I could comfortably attend my dream school. And to have that taken away from me is unfair,” Williams said.
Another student, Dwayne Irvin, also said he was deregistered because he missed a payment deadline. “I try so hard to respond to them, OK? I try so hard to respond to them, but I just don’t feel like I’m getting support or response,” Irving said.
MarLae’ Coffield said her scholarship and financial aid were enough to cover her tuition. “I graduated early. I graduated junior year with a 4.0 and I did all of that just to get into Howard University. But now I can’t go to Howard University,” Cofield said.
She also said her family had difficulty paying the required deposit. “All my savings, I have to deposit Fund management system The reason for raising this money is because my family has a lower income, so we had to suddenly raise this money by these specific dates, and we have done that,” Cofield said.

“We know the admissions update released yesterday is difficult and disappointing for students and their families,” the university said. “Confirming admission is critical to planning for academic programs, housing, financial aid and student support services.”
The university said students will receive refunds for tuition and scholarships sent, but the $800 tuition and housing deposit is non-refundable.
Unenrolled students have been told they can apply again as transfer students next year, and the university will continue to review cases involving pending scholarships and financial aid.
