The findings indicate that this is a long-term change rather than a series of isolated weather events, suggesting that even ordinary tides and storms can now have effects that previously required more specialized conditions. The study examined more than a century of sea level observations collected from tide gauges around the world and combined those records with climate model simulations to see how things have changed over time. Rather than just looking at how much sea levels have risen, the researchers looked at how often extreme coastal water levels occur now compared to the past.According to the study, the typical frequency of coastal sea-level events historically thought to be once-in-100-year events has increased dramatically around the world. The analysis also shows that human-caused sea level rise alone makes these extreme events several times more likely than they were at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Why rising sea levels are making coastal flooding worse
Coastal flooding is affected by many factors, including tides, storm surges, seasonal weather patterns and local geography. While these factors remain important, research shows that higher baseline sea levels are increasingly amplifying their effects. This study is further evidence that coastal communities may need to rethink how they assess flood risk. Infrastructure, drainage systems, transport networks and coastal defenses are often designed based on estimates of the historical frequency of extreme water levels.
