Federal health officials have linked a large cyclospora outbreak in the Midwest to lettuce, which is served at some Taco Bell restaurants in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Taco Bell said it has pulled lettuce from its restaurants and supply chain nationwide.

Jack in the Box said the recalled lettuce has arrived at stores in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana and has replaced the product with lettuce from another domestic source, adding, “At this time, based on the FDA’s ongoing investigation, there have been no reports of illness related to food served by Jack in the Box.”

Sysco, the largest U.S. food distributor, said it is “proactively distributing all Taylor Farms-processed iceberg lettuce products from Mexico and instructing customers to destroy them.” CNN.

Walmart is removing four Marketside brand bagged iceberg lettuce products from some stores as a precautionary measure, saying: “There is no indication that products sold in our stores are affected by the current Cyclospora investigation.”

Cyclospora outbreak intensifies

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include watery diarrhea, cramps, and bloating, which can last for weeks and lead to dehydration.

CDC data shows that since May 1, 34 states have reported nearly 7,000 confirmed or suspected cases. As of July 16, Michigan alone has reported more than 5,000 cases, with 102 people hospitalized, according to the state health department.

The Michigan health department said it “cannot say with certainty that every illness is linked to the same source of exposure,” but added that the dramatic increase in cases “strongly suggests that the vast majority of these illnesses are related to the same outbreak,” which would make it the largest cyclospora outbreak on record in the United States.
