Brussels construction site fire kills many, authorities say
A fire broke out at a large construction site in central Brussels on Tuesday, killing several people and rescue teams were still searching for six workers who were still missing, Reuters reported, citing local authorities. The fire broke out at a major renovation project at Place de Brouckere, where more than 200 workers were present. Three people were taken to the hospital, and authorities said an unknown number of bodies were found in one of two elevator shafts at the site.Reuters quoted spokesman Brecht Sperbrook as saying: “We were only able to access one of the two elevator cabinets, where we saw the bodies of two or three people.” Six workers were still missing, Spellbrook said, adding that the cause of the fire was unclear. The fire, which initially broke out on a lower floor, was quickly brought under control, according to the local fire brigade. However, the flames spread through the elevator shaft and triggered a second fire in the underground part of the building, complicating rescue efforts. Emergency crews continue search operations and investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash.
