‘Norway may row, but England roar’: British Armed Forces’ patriotic message goes viral ahead of World Cup clashes
As England prepare for a blockbuster FIFA World Cup clash with Norway, the MoD has shared an energetic video supporting Thomas Tuchel’s side and taking a hilarious dig at Norway’s famous Viking celebrations. The 50-second video, posted on X (formerly Twitter), begins with the words: “Norway can row. But England will roar,” a nod to the now-iconic Viking rowing celebrations led by Norwegian striker Erling Haaland after a major victory.During the celebrations, the players imitated rowing a Viking ship and waved their arms in unison, which has become a common sight after Norway’s big wins. The video shows members of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force cheering on the Three Lions around the world.Sailors on warships, soldiers waving the St George’s Cross flag and RAF personnel singing along all appeared at the end of the message: “Good luck tonight to our Armed Forces from around the world!”The light-hearted post quickly attracted attention online, adding to England’s World Cup excitement.Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer recently hinted that England would be rewarded with an extra bank holiday if they go all the way and lift the World Cup.Asked about the possibility, Starmer said he didn’t want to “get unlucky” and suggested the issue could be reconsidered if England reached the final.Reports suggest any additional holiday could be on July 24, although England would have to negotiate a quarter-final, possible semi-final and final first.England’s showdown with Norway follows dramatic last-16 wins for both teams.Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 and entered the quarter-finals of the Men’s Football World Cup for the first time in history, while England defeated Mexico 3-2 to advance to the quarterfinals and staged a wonderful showdown.
