“The Trump administration’s highest priority is the safety of Americans,” a State Department spokesman told Newsweek in a statement, adding that the agency was providing consular assistance to Carney’s family. “We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones on their passing.”
According to the Irish Times, Carney is from Westchester County, New York, but has lived in Killarney for several years. She moved to Killarney about five years ago and lived with her daughter, Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported.
The state pathologist has completed an autopsy on Carney’s body. Police have secured the scene as the investigation continues. Police are urging witnesses to contact the investigation team.
According to the BBC, their statement said: “Anyone who was in the Muckross Road area of Killarney between the evening of 6 and the afternoon of 7 July 2026 and who may have camera footage (including CCTV or dash cam) is asked to provide this footage to Garda Investigative Investigations.”
Police confirmed an incident room had been set up at Killarney Police Station. A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation.
